Kohler/Perkins 12.5KW Genset, on 35ft FC 1980 Wanderlodge - ca209man - 07-11-2010 08:19

Hi Guys,

Philip here in Central California, I have a nice 1980, 35FC, like most of you I
have been going thru it updating and fixing stuff.

It has a Kohler/Perkins 12.5 KW, Genset that runs great and produces power, but
the Fan doesn't come on anymore, I suspect the controller needs reworked, it
does have some burnt relays, and I'd like to start there (replacing the relays).

Here's my question:

Does anyone have any experience rebuilding the controller?

My Kohler dealer is fairly unless, just parts hangers, that can't trouble shoot,
should they be able to order the original Kohler relays?

Any advice on how to get this done would help.

Thanks guys for any assiatnce or steerage you can provide.

Philip

Your controller may have problems, but it
does not control the fan. Unless your generator has been modified the fan is
connected directly to the generator output. There is a Ckt breaker in the
circuit so it is probably either that or the fan motor.

Hi Philip:

Chuck is right, it is not the relays in the control box giving you trouble
so no need to go there. And yes some of us has completely rebuilt the
controllers from the ground up.

The fan motor is a 1 HP Capacitor start unit. It is wired for 220VAC with
one leg going to leg 1 and the other going to leg 2 and the neutral going
to L0. Do you have a multimeter and are you comfy with it's use? You need
to open the control box and on one side you should find a terminal strip in
the bottom that has the L1/L2/L0 wiring coming from the end bell on the
Kohler and the connections to the fan motor will be on the corresponding
terminals. With the gen set running, you need to select AC volts on your
meter and carefully place the red and black leads of the meter on L1 and L2
and you should read 220 VAC or red lead on L1 and black lead on L0 and read
110vac, then red lead on L2 and black lead on L0 and read 110vac. If your
getting these voltage readings then it is your fan motor that needs
replacing. If your not getting those voltages then we go further, but I
suspect, since you said the unit is producing power in the Coach that your
fan motor is dead.

Kohler/Perkins 12.5KW Genset, on 35ft FC 1980 Wanderlodge - GARY MINKER - 07-19-2010 23:29

All good but there is no neutral. The frame of the motor is grounded and the motor always runs when the generator runs. It is a safety feature. The start cap may be dried out. You can replace the cap with a new one from Grainger or the whole thing.
