Bendix air pump replacement - lcondosta - 06-24-2005 12:53 My air brake pump on my 85 PT 40is getting weak and is leaking oil badly. I took it to the local detroit diesel dealer to get a estimate on replacing it. The first price I got was about three grand for a new pump and about ten hours to replace at ninety dollars an hour. Hmmm? Well that did'nt flush to well so I asked how about a rebuilt pump? They quoted me Fifteen hundred for a Bendix rebuilt unit plus labor. To make a long and expensive story short I purchased a Bendix rebuilt pump from Fleetpride for two hundred ninety five dollars plus a six hundred eighty five dollar core charge which was refunded when I returned the old unit. It took me and my wife about four hours to replace this unit . I just can't see how these people are making money at these prices. Lee&Geraldine Condosta 85 PT40 Wilmington N.C Bendix air pump replacement - Stephen Birtles - 06-26-2005 12:55 Jay are you geeting more water or oil in the first tank than usual or if equipped do you have to =srevice air dryer more than usual this may be a sign that rings are passing oil into air lines which would necessitate a rebuild if not check governor or replace it. It is a 20 dollar part and if it craps out will affect the inital fill rate by restricting air flow Stephen 77fc35 --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Jay Darst" wrote: > Lee, > > Did you notice the system pumping up quicker? > > Anthing else noticeable? > > I think my pump is gwtting worn out, only because it takes a bit for > it to pump up... > > Thanks > Jay Darst > 85Pt40 > SpringfieldIL > > > --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "lcondosta" > wrote: > > My air brake pump on my 85 PT 40is getting weak and is leaking oil > > badly. Lee&Geraldine Condosta 85 PT40 Wilmington N.C Bendix air pump replacement - Jay Darst - 06-26-2005 15:24 Haven't noticed any water or oil in the tanks. Replaced the governor about a year ago. Serviced the dryer as well. The dryer looked like it had a fair amount of water and oil mix in it. Looked like a milky vasoline or similiar... The governor did prevent the air pressure from reaching normal 135- 140psi, it would get to mnaybe 75psi. Takes about 15 minutes to air up. Jay Darst 85PT40 SpringfieldIL where my Bird currently has about 3,000 hours on the Detroit. Speedo says 48K miles so we'll have to assume the hours is the correct indicator... probably has 135,000 miles on it now. --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Stephen Birtles" > Jay > are you geeting more water or oil in the first tank than usual or if > equipped do you have to =srevice air dryer more than usual this may be > a sign that rings are passing oil into air lines which would > necessitate a rebuild if not check governor or replace it. Lee&Geraldine Condosta 85 PT40 Wilmington N.C Bendix air pump replacement - one_dusty_hoot - 06-27-2005 07:59 Jay, There is some pretty decent information troubleshooting the Bendix pump and system on the Bendix site. Might check it out before you replace the pump. http://www.bendix.com/downloads/BW1971.pdf Mine is pokey getting there to the cut-off pressure but it does eventually. I'm sure there is an optimum time from stat-up to cut off that typifies a healthy air system I was reading also that leaky check valves near the rear axle can get gunked up and leak too. Course any leak in the system would place extra stain on the pump.
