fan shroud 82 through 85 PT 40 - Harvey Lawrence - 06-27-2005 02:11 I recently had a problem with the spot weld that held a 2" lip around the edge of the fan shroud. This piece of metal goes all around the opening on the fan shroud and bend in toward the engine. My problem was a very bumpy stretch of highway around south Dallas and it either jarred this metal strip loose or broke the welds from the serious road vibrations. Anyway to top of the shroud dropped into the fan and it sounded so bad I thought the engine had blown. I stopped as soon as I could and manage to bend the end of the metal back away from the fan and continued on. At a later ispection of the fan I found that it was damage to the point that it would "run out" of true 2" or more, and when the engine RPM increased that was more like 6". Again when I searched for a replacement I contacted Horton fan and as luck would have it,they sent the wrong one. I sending the fan back to Horton I found out that Engineering Cooling Systems made the fan originally and the numbers were stamped in each blade, and that Horton had just bought ECS. the result was they made an exact replacement. Blade & Shipping around $180.00. The point Carefully check your fan shroud all the way around to be sure it is still secure. With a bright litght, crawl down under and check as you can reach the whole sroud from underneath. I might have been 1 in a million case, but some how I do not think so. Your checking it will save you money if welds have broken on you shroud also. Harvey Lawrence 84 pt40 |
