DD Series-60 Replacing Oil Cooler Seals - davidbrady - 07-03-2013 12:20

Well I finally go to it:

0) Raise rear of coach and secure with jack stands,
1) Drain the coolant,
2) Remove the oil filters,
3) Clamp closed and remove the chassis coolant line coming from the cooler,
4) Snip a ton of wire ties freeing up excess wiring slack to the engine block heater,
5) Remove 3 lower bolts and 1 upper bolt securing cooler and oil filter housing to engine block,
6) Take off shirt and replace with new after taking a bath in coolant and oil,
7) Swing Oil cooler/filter housing away from engine,

8) There's not enough room to completely remove the assy so do your best to clean o-ring grooves and mating surfaces with scotch-brite pad, rags, scrapers, and die-grinder with scotch-brite attachment,
9) Replace 3 o-rings, one each on the inlet and outlet of the oil cooler housing, one on the coolant passageway,
10) Lift and wrestle assy back into place and secure with four bolts,
11) Attach heater coolant hose,
12) Top up oil filters and spin on,
13) Refill coolant antifreeze,
14) Clean up nasty mess on engine block sump and garage floor,
15) Start engine and top up coolant,
16) Enjoy you're leak-free Detroit Diesel Series-60! Smile

Oil cooler o-ring part number: 23537789

Total job, about 4 hours.

Total job, about 4 hours.

Hey David,

It took you only 4 hours to change those o-rings & gasket. I just paid $645 ($129 X 5hrs) to have the same job done. So you did it as quickly as a master mechanic. However, they did spend time steam cleaning around the area trying to locate the leak. We initally thought it was the s60 rear crank main. I'm glad it wasn't.

At $645.00 it was worth every penny! I figure it's worth about $10 per drop of coolant and oil dripped on my clothing, arms, hands, and face. Oh, I guess I should add in an hour for the shower I took afterward! LOL Smile
