3208 CAT versus 5.9 Cummins
The Cummins is a slower turning engine than the Cat. To make the swap
work, I'm almost certain that there have to be gearing changes. There are a number of people who have swapped the Cummins into older Travco's but they either have to switch the rear end or go with the 545 with overdrive to get decent top speed. I think the 545 is only rated to pull 14k lbs tops.(at least that is what I have read) Also, the later electronic 5.9's are notorious for failing lift pumps which take out the IP when they do, since the IP is lubricated by diesel in the later models. If you have one, put a fuel pressure gauge between the lift pump and IP to avoid expensive repairs. Kerry 82 FC 35 Denver |
