Jay I would take I-80 through PA & stay off the PA turnpike. I hate
driving it. I-80 is not to mountainous through PA. I don't have the rest of the route to the city but I have gone up that way myself. Don 89 SP 36' Butler, PA Looks as though there are many options- I70, I76, I78, I80, I90. One of these has to be a better drive than another for some reason or another ;~} Any suggestions are appreciated. My family and I are contemplating a trip to New York in June.
Does anyone have any suggestions so far as great campground for a week or so near or in NY city and what is the best route? Appears to be very mountainous, toll roads, tunnels, overall PITA driving. The kinda driving that you wouldn't want to do for 14 or 15 hours. Hank, will be wanting to hear from you for sure, as you bring the FC back from NY! Looks as though there are many options- I70, I76, I78, I80, I90. One of these has to be a better drive than another for some reason or another ;~} Any suggestions are appreciated. We'll be in NYC with the Bird in late June or July. Last year we
camped quite a long way out in Florida, NY. I think it was called Black Bear Campground or something like that. The campground bills itself as the closest camping to NYC but it was quite run down. Their pictures on the web show a nice pool which our daughter would have loved. But the pool wasn't open and looked as though it hadn't been maintained in years. We took the commuter train into the city. This year we plan to stay at Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City, just across from Manhattan. It's a marina/RV park within walking distance of a PATH station. I-90 is pretty flat, follows the Mohawk and Hudson River's but it's a toll road. Rt 17 across southern NY is a lot more hilly. Rt 20 across upstate NY is pretty and is often close to historically interesting Eric Canal towns, but it's not as fast as I-90. We're heading to Washington DC before NYC so we'll be driving a more southern route. Kerry 82 FC 35 Denver > My family and I are contemplating a trip to New York in June. > > |

I'll be driving from Long Island to Grantsville, Maryland for my FIRST overnight stop.....I hope...about 300 miles. I looked at Mapquest.com for routing...Some say Interstate 80 to George Washington Bridge is flattest. I hope that 80FC31 is a hill climber in Maryland!! I'm glad you found the 'Bird you wanted. Don't forget to carry about Forty Thousand in cash so that you will be able to pay your bridge tolls -- LOL Have a good drive. Mario:
Do you know how close to the campground is the public transportation to Manhattan? Hawe you stayed there before? What is it like? Coming from the West, the disadvantage I see is that you have to drive thru the city to access it. What is the beach like?
