Battery's
Need to replace my 8 coach battey's in my 92 wanderlodge....... I'm
not going to switch to 6 volt golf cart battery's or any of the new high priced non proven type..... Just plain old regular type..... My question then is ... do I get a regular type battery or a deep cycle.... I've seen battery's range from $130 at the parts store to $65 at the walmart .... Where should I buy to get the best bang for the buck ?????............ Dan 92 WLWB 40 ft. Depere, Wi/ Summerfield Fl. |

Dan: Generally you get what you pay for. I have Gel Cells in mine.
Two have gone bad after 9 years. Fortunately they were easy to isolate. I plan to get at least another year out of the batteries. What I really like is the fact that they are no maintenance, ever and I don't get any corrosion on terminals and no gassing in the compartment. At about $150 per each, that works out to be a cost of $15 each year. If you get 5 or 6 years out of the regular batteries, the cost ends up about the same, but you have to mess with them all the time. Oh yes, definitely Deep Cell. R.E. Another thing to consider. One dealer I know says he buys cheap batteries and
replaces them every couple years, putting the old ones in tractors or a work car or some other non-critical application. Expensive batteries can go bad as easily as cheap ones, he said. Due to an ordering mistake, I have four new AGM's mixed with 2 old Gels. With the inverters configured for gels, there's no danger of damage to the AGM's, they're just not qite fully charged. The other way around though, with the inverter charging Gels to AGM voltage, could be damaging. I do plan to replace the 2 remaining Gels soon. Fortunately my starting batteries and generator battery are regular 12V. There are many good primers on RV battery use on the net. Brad Barton 00LXiDFW bbartonwx@... Battery's
Dan,
When I replaced my Trojan's last year I went to their web site and located the distribution centers in the area. Although there was one located in Atlanta which was closer, I found a provider in Macon and simply stopped by on my way to RITV. I did look into AGM's and Gel cell but for my use and considering that I had gotten 7 years out of my previous batteries I decided to stick with the Trojan T-125 which I felt was the best value for me. Obviously everyone has their preferances but for my 'bird I am satisfied with my decision. When I hear the arguement against lead acid batteries due to the maintenance and mess, I go by my own experiences with lead acid. I think that adding water and the mess associated with lead acid batteries is mostly determined by the design of the charging system. I use one of the microprocessor controlled chargers (TrueCharge) and have found over the years that because it is microprocessor controlled, I rarely have to add water and do not have near the venting mess that I had when using the old batter boilers. I still concede that the AGM's and gel cells are a better technology, for my use (and money) the lead acid is just fine.... Dan, I second Rob's recommendation. Phred's Poopsheets are
invaluable. (He even has a Poopsheet on, well, poop). down to the bottom on the battery page, you'll find a link to the Table of Contents.) I suggest you browse through all of his sheets. One note, he hasn't updated his material in a few years so the very latest info won't be covered. But I get the impression that you're not the kinda guy who's comfortable on the bleeding edge of technology.
