Rides
I'm interested in hearing from other Wanderlodge owners that own and ride 2 and 3 wheelers. I'm an old guy; I ride a 3 wheel Champion trike conversion Goldwing (2 wheels kick my A$$, but I refuse to grow up.) To me the Goldwing is like comparing SOBs to Wanderlodges.
Our informal group (about 15 cycles of late), tomorrow will ride to the Rock House near Malibu, CA. It's reported the STARS hang out there (and yes they do), Leno and others. From there we will ride to Pacific Coast Highway, take Coast Highway south to the Pacific Palisades, and head inland to home from there. Should be a great ride. Temperatures tomorrow along the coach are reported to be 75 degrees plus. Should be a great ride. -- Curt Sprenger 1987 PT38 8V92 "MacAttack Racing" Anaheim Hills, CA |

Curt "Tempertures along the coach" I believe is a Freudian slip
revealing of what you would rater be riding. I ride dirt and know enough about my skill to keep it where dropping a bike is $35.00 and not $3,500. Curt,
Well, I may not be a young guy any more either, but I refuse to say I'm an old guy (and like you, I also refuse to grow up)! My ride is a little more minimalist and retro than your 'coach' ride. I have a HD Softail Springer with the skinny 21" front tire that will reach out and bite you at the slightest provocation, but I love the retro look and the ride is fantastic! http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/W.../2a02?b=11 It's a classic, but more and more the Wanderlodge is the ride of choice! Enjoy the ride! Well, still a WL wannabe, but I ride a Moto Guzzi V11 Sport and a BMW K1200S.
In fact, next weekend, spending three days riding through Central California. And then the following Saturday, I am flying to Jacksonville FL, and attempting an Iron Butt 50cc (50 hours, coast to coast).
Then late May, I am spending four days riding up into Oregon with friends.
So for now, my 'camping' involves 170hp and a motel. But that will change soon.

Hey Ken,
It is disconcerting that your YahooID on that message is "krashtesterken" and you are attempting a coast-to-coast Iron Butt run! Those things are really challenging (very mildly stated). Be careful and good luck. Which bike are you attempting it with? As a long time wannabe around here, maybe you should snatch up that 'giveaway' SP that Greg found on the east coast and ride that bad. Much safer. Good luck. Yup, 'Krashtesterken', that was given to my after an airlift evacuation from a motorcycle accident in the forest some years ago. Really stupid accident, bike did exactly what I asked of it, I just was mid-day-dream when I realized that there was a corner. Darn corner interrupted my day-dream! But, I ride in full gear (head to toe), so not a scratch, just a broken collar bone.
I have successfully completed other Iron Butt events (albeit smaller), so this will be a challenge, but we are pretty confident in our plan.
We are utilizing a 2007 BMW R1200GS*. My friend is riding it out from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, I am flying there, and then riding it back. He is then flying off to a business meeting. I usually ride about 20k/year, some commuting, but most is for weekend type rides.
One of the things holding me back from buying a WL is time. At this point, between work, work travel, daughter, and some riding, I just do not have that much time for coach travel, plus wrenching time. My daughter is 8 years old, and with my custody challenges, I really do not have too much travel time available with her. Last summer would have really been our first opportunity (2-weeks through California), but usually her summers are pretty full with other travel (mostly international). Hopefully, within the next two years, our/her schedule will relax a bit, and I will reduce my riding time, and then be ready for a WL. I will not stop riding, just spend fewer weekends on the bike.Currently, many of my weekends are a late night departure, a morning ride, and return by mid-Sunday. All with a very minor total expenditure $$ (tires being a bigger cost than gas at this point on my K1200S). I know that I cannot justify a WL based on $$, but I also do not want to have it sit in my yard, because I do not have the time or $$ to take it out for short weekend trips. On the bike, a nice Sunday Fish Taco run to Ensenada Mexico costs me a total of about $100. That is not a realistic day plan for a WL (customs delays would really hurt it), so it would have to be a weekend trip. But often, we have other commitments for Saturday mornings, or Sunday afternoons, so there would be fewer such trips.
* R1200GS. This bike has tons of mods for long distance riding, from custom seat, lots of aux lighting, Ohlins suspension, Nav, Radar, cruise control, etc. It is very well suited to this type of ride. Bike is 10 months old, and will have 24k/miles by the end of this month.
