Aluminum Honeycomb Granite Flooring
Hi Leroy, I've been told that the aluminum backed granite has been used in buildings for 10 to 15 years now. Some people call it elevator tile. You can get it in different thicknesses. I've seen 3/8" panels with 1/8" of granite and 1/4" of aluminum honeycomb backing. A company called Stoneply (http://www.stoneply.com/), out of Texas, will make it in any dimension you want. For an RV they recommend a 1/2" thick product of 1/4" stone and 1/4" backing. The benefits are that the product weighs only 3.5 lbs per square and it's supposed to be stronger than 3/4" solid granite in terms of resisting cracking. I figure that I'd need around 150 sq feet which would weigh around 500 lb. It cuts like granite using the same diamond cutters, it's adhered with either epoxy or some sort of mastik, and is grouted with a silicon caulk.
