1990SP36 with NORDYNE Roof Air Conditioners Capacitor fix

Forum members with a SP36.
The other day, my roof air was blowing hot air only.
After shutting it down, motor would not restart. However after taking
top off, motor worked with a little bit of hand turning to get it
going. However, compressor would still NOT turn on.
So, I took out large silver CAPACITOR and had a motor rewind shop
check it. Capacitor was bad. Because Capacitor was a RARE one, they
sold me a couple capactors that I rewired using a simple gnd wire
between them.

NOW the rear AC works fine. Bottom line is the STARTER CAPACITOR
was shot.
I am writing this because the NORDYNE AC units are no longer
available but very well built.
I had the same problem two years ago with the front unit. Total
repair cost; $15 and a lot of hard work on top of the roof at 109
degrees. It was 90 degrees at 6 am when I started.
So....BEFORE you rush out and buy a new roof unit......recommend you
check the starter capacitor. ALSO make sure you OIL both motors
once a year.

These NORDYNE roof airs are great units as I have had them on almost
continuously since arriving in Vegas on May 28th!

Hank, many ac units have a duel capacitor. one set of wires for the
fan and a set for the compressor. Then many newer compressors have
two capacitors one for compressor start and one for compressor run
torque. prob with some parallel or series repairs may be the
compressor run part because the start part is momentary and if it
wont start it just kicks off??? Your repair tech probly considered
the run output?????

I dig holes for a living and it could be that "run" doesnt even
matter, I'm speaking with my attorney today, I'll ask him.

Greg:
In my "case" this time, the entire capacitor was shot....I guess u
can tell it is shot because it is "swollen". u can also use a
capacitor tester to measure the "microfarads....
Both the the fan motor side and the compressor side were
shot......one was 25 mfd and the other 12.5 mfds. However he had no
such animal at the store so he sold me two capitors and I hooked a
wire from common side of one to common side of the other essentially
making it "one" capacitor and then I hooked up the fan side and
compressor side wires. I was an electronics calibration technician
in an AF laboratory years ago, among other things, BEFORE I became
an "honest" attorney....LOL
