Most underground storage is done using abandoned (or abandoned portions of) mines -- most often, salt mines. 

California is very short of these facilities. The only salt operations I'm aware of on the west coast are tidal salt ponds in the SF Bay Area. (Not really a good storage site!)

The closest underground storage facility I know of is in Utah.

Our bird is at the Louisville Underground, Louisville, Kentucky.
According to the owners they have RVs and equipment stored there from
all over the country including from Alaska. There are also 2 other
birds. I pay 139 per month. They only offer valet parking, 48 hour
notice required to remove and they are open 8 - 4:30 M - F.
This facility was a limestone quarry which was also used as a bomb
shelter during the cold war of the 60's. It is a constant 58 degees.
I can have escorted access to the bus during business hours.

In Kansas City, the leader in underground storage, a lot of acres. They use them for offices, food storage and just about everything, from a clock repair to warehouses. We have about 5 companys that run them. I pay $62 a month and I have to make appointment but I get to park it myself. There are many RV, boats and cars. It is a good deal. I still need to sell my Cram-alot-inn, which is in the mine.
