Jamie, I am not 100% sure in your case, but yes if you are low enough on freon there are low pressure switches that will shut the system down, in order to prevent damage to the compressor. Have your system checked to verify that you have low pressure condition, and then find out where the leak is. This may be a expensive job, or you may be lucky, and just have a couple seals that need to be replaced. Good Luck, George Burke 1977FC31 Charlotte

First check for a fuse in line to the engine ac compressor. Our '87 PT engine AC pump glass fuse is located on the floor of the battery charger compartment.

There is most likely a low-pressure cut-out switch screwed into the accumulator
which will have hoses that look tougher than for water and have metal fittings, and what looks like a big wart with wires which is the switch. It most likely has to connect to work, which means any time any wire gets corroded or dislodged it will cease. Since you get some cooling by jumping the compressor clutch, it sounds low on freon, presumably 148a. You should be able to purchase a recharge kit at any auto parts chain sometime when their not too busy and have them show you how to hook it up. It will come with a pressure guage, or the store may even loan you a guage, which you can check even before the $19-$25 the kit is likely to cost including your first can of freon. Wear protective eyeware, long sleeves and pants, tie up any loose hair or clothing, and follow the instructions. Be careful the threads don't get crossed. Before you leave the parts store, get someone to show you where your valve is. (The kit instructions are not likely to tell you where to find it in your engine compartment.) Note that if the screw-on fitting seems the wrong size, it probably means you need a different variety of freon. --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "gasparillaglass" wrote: > > dose anyone know if there is a presure switch or anything that would stop the motor ac from working?? > when I jump the compresure it works and gets colder but not that cold > somthing is stopping the compresure from kicking in > if the freon is low will that cose this?? > any help would be apprciated thanks > Jamie Brandt > 1990 wb-40 > florida > |

If there are no a/c units on top of the roof, you must have the basement air conditioning units, such as the CruiseAirs.

It appears the 2 compressor are not running, but not sure where they are located or how to access. I assume the units are close to the return grill build into the case work. If my BB had a engine ac compressor it is not there now and there are no ac units on top of the coach. Any suggestions?

Jamie, I have gauges here at home that I have for the old freon, R-12, and new gauges for the later R-134. These are for automotive testing. If your units are house type, then a different type of freon is used. There are LOW and HIGH pressure sides to all a/c systems. If you don't have the equipment, and aren't familiar with these type systems, then get someone that does look at it for you. None of us knows everything about everything. If you put in the wrong type freon, or connect a can of freon to the HIGH pressure side, you can get yourself badly hurt. So, as Andy once told Aunt Bea, "Aunt Bea, pay the MAN". In other words, it may be time to have someone check this out for you. Good Luck, G. Burke 1977 FC31 Charlotte.
