Kohler Generator 12.5 smoking alot?
I was wondering if anyone has any input on where to begin?
injectors? Fuel pump? I have looked in the files and database for info
on the generator but found none, does anyone know where to get some
sort of mechanical info on the Kohler Generator 12.5. maybee a pdf
file or such thanks.

John,

Starting with the easy stuff, when was the last time the air filter
was serviced? Ditto on the fuel filter and racor filter(if you have
one on the 85). If it s not using oil, then it's most likely a
fuel/air mixture problem.

While you are in there doing that, check every fuel line fitting to
make sure they are tight and have not vibrated loose and are sucking
air when the genset is running. Listen for air leaks around fuel
lines while it is running (piece of plastic hose works good for this).

Then if it is still smoking, you can start on the more tedious stuff
like checking the output pressure on the lift pump/fuel pump. Does
the fuel pump primer lever appear to have some pressure on it when you
pump it? And does it move fuel out the bleed valve on the injector
pump when you are pumping it?

Beyond that, I've got a few hard copy pages from a Perkins manual that
might help a little. Every now and then a Perkins manual appears on
eBay. Yours is probably a 4.107 spec series. The wonderful thing
about the Perkins is that you need the spec number and all the serial
numbers to get most anything ordered correctly.

How many hours useage on the genset anyway?

John,

1.)Change the oil- at about 45-50 hrs my gen starts to smoke a bit more
2.)replace the air filter- made a big difference(verify the filter is
installed and reassembled correctly)
3.)run the gen with a pretty good load and try to build a little heat
in it.
4.)use the gen often- it needs the exercise

There was a BIG pdf floating around, think Ralph Fullenwider had it.

I'll see if i have it...
