house electrical question

82 FC. When I hook up the 50amp cable to the 50 amp connector,
everything is fine. When I hook the top 30amp cable front ac and half
coach work fine (as it should). When I hook up the bottom 30 amp
connector it immediately trips breaker on the supply. Same thing
happens when I use the 30 amp cable designed for the 50 amp hook up.
Why would it work ok with 50 amp cable but trip breaker with 30 amp on
either the 50amp supply side or the bottom 30 amp supply? It's done
this as long as I've had it. The frustration associated with it is
that I can only run the front AC when hooked up to 30amps and it
doesn't cool the bedroom.

Sounds haunted.

We need to isolate the source of the problem.

First plug in the cord to the supply, without the plug on the coach.
No trip?

Next turn the two 30a breakers (separate box below the main breaker
panel in an '82) off, and turn the transfer switch to OFF, plug the
cord into the lower 30a (yellow) coach connection.
No trip?

Turn the transfer switch to "30A"
No trip?

Turn off the two main breakers in the main breaker panel (50a
breakers), and turn on the two 30a breakers in the lower panel one
at a time.
No trip?

Turn off all breakers in the main panel, turn on the main breakers
one at a time.
No trip?

Turn on load breakers one at a time, preferrably with AC and other
loads off until you find the one that trips.
No trip?

Turn loads on individually until the offending load is found.

Once you find the part of this sequence that trips the breaker it
will become apparent where the short is. Most likely it is in the
cordset, or between the 30a connection and the main breaker panel
(which includes the transfer switch). BTW, and I apologize if you
already know this, but the 30a position on the transfer switch is
for the two (yellow) separate 30a cords. When using the single (red-
tape) 30a cord you use the 50a setting on the transfer switch.

We wanted to visit the Mansion House of the Oneida community but
arrived in Oneida too late for the last tour. We decided to stay in
the Walmart in Oneida until the next day. Parked there and took the
toad to the Mansion house to check out the hours. When we returned
to Walmart there was a post it note on the door from Tom telling us
to call him, which we did and he stopped by with lots of useful
advice. Great coincidence.

Thanks, found it. Kitchen receptacle circuit. Turned off the
breaker until I have time to trace out the problem and now I have
choice of AC's. By the way, with the red 30 amp cord in the 50 amp
outlet, neither of the 110 indicators in the panel shows current
although I do have power. Is this normal?

On an '82 one of the voltmeters runs off of the kitchen receptacle
breaker.
