89 8.0 onan diesel gen set, hard to start
Has been hard to start ever since I bought it , over a year ago. It
cranks great, but wont fire now. I replaced the fuel filter several months ago to eliminate it.The tank is full of fuel and the fuel solinoid energizes when start button pressed.I loosened the bleed nut on the top of the filter and fuel squirts out in a steady stream when I crank it. I then loosened the rear(3 cyl)injector on top and fuel just drizzels out when cranked. How should the fuel squirt out when a connection is loosened? I tried it from all four locations of start buttons. Tom said I could have an air leak but how can you tell? I have no place where fuel leaks out... Anybody else ever had this problem and what was the fix.. frustrated this has been going on forever.... Thanks for any help you can provide. Ed Gardels 89sp Arlington, Texas getting cooler!! |

Ed,
Are you warming the glow plugs by holding the stop button for a few seconds? You should hear the fuel pump running while doing this (tick-tick-tick...). ED,
This 3 cylinder likes the glow plugs. It may be easier to start especially in cooler weather, From the generator compartment, Both the start and glow plug switches can be used at the same time. First warm the glow plugs, about 30 sec. then toggle the glow plug switch as you try to start. The other three interior switches heat the glow plugs in the "Off" position only. If this does not work for you, there may be a defective glow plug. Well...
My paper brains (blue box) are located in my coach, and it's been a while since I wore my Wanderlodge thinking cap. The way I hear it, the three cylinder Kubota has a history of starting a bit rough when cold, but it can always get started with a little help from the glow plugs and priming. With my start switch in 'stop', I get glow plugs and priming. You might check if your glow plug circuit is being energized by putting a voltmeter on it. It really sounds like a glow plug problem or circuit to me. The steel lines after the high pressure injection pump should squirt
out with a pulse when the engine is turned over. I loosen one at a time while cranking the engine. CurtS had issues with his Yanmar ( john Deere)and it would not start unless the return lines were let open. it may be time for injector cleaning. If it was my genset, I would pull off the injectors and have them bench tested and rebuilt. You could also check if there is a good flow on the supply fitting to the high press injector pump. Keep the batteries fully charged while cranking the genset over because low battery turns is sure to eatup the starter. If it was the injector spray, replace the engine oil after you clean up the problem. The Kabotas wash out when they dont start and I have seen as much as a quart of Dfuel make its way into the lube oil. Ed,
Preheat the glow plugs and feel to see if they are heating up. On my 12 KW, I heat it for ten seconds and it will fire right up otherwise it grinds and grinds. Ed
On my genny I heat for 15 sec then turn engine over a couple of turns, heat for 15 more then it cranks running rough momentarily. If the weather is not cold or it has been run lately it will crank after first heating. LT 90 SP in Eclectic, AL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard O.
