Fellow Wanderlodgers,

My 83 FC-35 is on its first roadtrip as I write this. Left NJ on
Tuesday and made it to Atlanta with few mechanical problems.

Until last night. I was at a concert when the 3" dynamo pulley on my
Perkins 12.5 generator ceased up. I smelled the smoke, turned it off,
and watched the belt burn in half on the pulley.

Spent hours running around Atlanta today looking for a new pulley and
bearing. No luck. Nobody seems capable of finding the part number
from 1983. Or a similar pulley that might work.

Heading down to West Palm Beach, FL tonight. Its going to be very hot!

Might anybody know the part number for the small 3" pulley on the
Perkins that you adjust the tension with? If I had that number, I
might have much more success.

You should see how fried the old bearings were!

Andy,

Copying my message on this forum as well, since you posted on both:

I'm all new here so I don't know exactly what pulley you're talking
about, but my guess is this is a simple idler pulley. Have you taken
the old one off and brought it to an auto parts store? It's doubtful
they will be able to look the part number up by vehicle or device, but
idler pulleys are idler pulleys and if you take it in there, they will
almost certainly have a replacement part available. It's a very common
part used on most engines.

Even if they don't have one available, you can press the old bearing
out and pop a new one in fairly easily and they will certainly stock
new bearings. A hammer, block of wood and a tool to remove the little
embedded "c" clamps might be enough to get the job done. (I used a
small vice to hold the pulley and hammered the bearing out when I
replaced them on my DeLorean). Or take it to any auto repair shop and
they should be able to swap the bearing out for you in a few minutes.

So, try taking the actual pulley with you, and use the term "idler
pulley", you should have much more success.

Kind of hard to believe a place the size of Atlanta doesn't have a
good bearing supply and repair house that could replace that bearing!
I know this was discussed in the past on the forum, but a I did a
quick search for you but I couldn't find the posts. I'll look in my
offline backup files when I get home. Seems like the bearing was
available at NAPA?

In any event, you might want to take a look in the Links section at
the Perkins Diesel Repair Manual link for some part numbers of the
dynamo on page B.13 for the part numbers on the dynamo which might
provide some clues to a parts counter guy. Section Q.5 covers the
operation, but I did not see any part numbers in there.

Andy,

I pressed out the old bearing and pressed a new one in. Here is the
bearing number for NSK brand: 6203ZZC3. Buy a spare.

I also have handy a Dayco belt number: 17415

If you can read the bearing number I purchased mine at NAPA, knocked it out and
took a socket and put it back in. The pully itself should be ok. Then the belt
length and I would guess is a V type. Save the burned belt for reference.

If you don't have any luck with NAPA, you may try a marine repair facility as
the Perkins is a popular marine engine and they might be able to get parts for
you...
