Overpriced KOA Green River UT was: Re: Michelin Tires not available

We spent a couple of days at Zion NP enroute to Golden CO after
attending the SWBB rally at Buellton, CA. Leaving CA we drove up I-15
then to I-70 to head for Golden. The RV Park recommended to us in
Springdale (just outside the main entrance to Zion) had closed or
changed hands, so we were unable to find it to make a reservation.
So, we stayed in a very nice, clean park in Hurricane UT (about 20
miles out from the park). We didn't have time for Bryce -- but will
"do" that one some other time.

I note that the rules will not allow an over-40' coach to go through
the tunnel in Zion, so that interferes somewhat with the routes we
can take.

The KOA in Green River used to be "United Campground" -- that was
listed in the directory as having rather reasonable rates --- we
called ahead and the lady even answered "United Campground" ... and
reserved a site. When we arrived, we were shocked to discover a KOA
-- and I was even more shocked at a $37 charge (including AAA
discount) for a rather so-so, dusty (everything is unpaved)
campground with 30 Amp+cable TV (I don't have the satellite hooked up
yet) or 50 Amp with no cable. Since the weather was moderate, I opted
for the TV 'cause I didn't need the AC.

We passed two other campgrounds enroute to this one -- but it was
nearly 6:00 PM and after 7 hours on the road I decided to not go
shopping.

Lesson: Ask the rate and verify the name of the park when calling ahead.

BTW, the camp host also suggested the Best Western restaurant, but we
tend to "eat in" as we like our usual diet...

To keep this BB oriented, I note that there are lots of heavy grades
once you get on I-70. The 'bird is doing fairly well with the water
temp holding at 190-195. Oil temperature seems to hang at 220 but
sometimes reaching 225. I'm sure glad we're doing this with daytime
temps of 75-80 degrees and not the summer temps of 100-110!

Today, our plan is for about 300 miles from Green River UT to Idaho
Springs CO. Some serious grades ahead! -- It should be a long day on
the road.

There's a state park in Green River, right on the river. I've always tent
camped there when
canoeing Labrynth Canyon. I can't recall what kind of RV hook ups it has, but I
like
camping right on the river. Bugs can be bad there somewhere. There's a great
river
runner's bar in town with superb burger but I can't remember the name of the
place.
Wish it was me heading west. A week on the Green River this time of year is
about as
good as life gets.

Pete:

Too late now; however, 45' tour buses (Prevost/MCI/Setra) routinely use
the Carmel Tunnel in ZNP. The "tunnel card" does state not over 40'.
Those cards were printed in the days when coaches did not exceed 40' -
and have not been revised. The main concern is height - necessitating
running down the center of the tunnel road - and temporary one-way
traffic flow

The state park in Green River doesn't have much in the way of hook-
ups, from the listings I saw. Not a good choice for my all-electric
coach that sucks batteries dry in no time... <sigh>
