Looking for central Texas service pit
Does anyone know of a location in central Texas (Georgetown, Round
Rock, Pflugerville, Auston, etc.) that is willing to rent out their service pit for short periods? Need to rebuild the air dryer and install automatic drains on air tanks. After looking at it today I would have to say it is unsafe to do it any other way than over a service pit. Michael Brundridge 92 WB40 Georgetown, TX |

Didn't believe me when I said I hope you had a pit, huh? I have
serviced the air dryer by building 2"x12" wood ramps for the back wheels and driving up on them. Set the brakes, drop the jacks, chock the front wheels on both sides front/back, add a couple external auxiliary 20 ton hydraulic jacks and a couple of 20 ton jack stands under the frame and you are good to go to work. (Yes, I don't believe in taking chances under there.) Alternatively, Stewart & Stevenson quoted it for 2.5 hrs "RV" labor on the dryer plus over-priced parts. Oh I believed ya, just thought I could get it high enough with the
20 ton jacks that I have. But I have a good slope on my driveway and once I started jacking it and saw how little room there was under than and how big I am , I said no way. Better safe than dead. Needs a little TLC mechanically but looks great. I was thinking of the service pit rental myself. I need to do the same thing with the " Pink Panther" . I drive mine up on 2 layers of 2x10's. There's a set for each tire (ignoring the tags). I can get every where under mine when the suspension is dropped that way. There should be more than enough room to do the dryer and drains. You can carry your "pit" with you!

I always fear the tag holding the bus up and the drive bags losing air. this would allow the bus to roll and drag the drive axle. I also pump down the service tank so no one can accidentally hit the park brake off. As far as a pit goes, two trench plates and 5 min on my excavator. I swapped work with a gunite company to shoot a pit but I am over thinking it too much. CHP commercial inspector visit my shop every other year and always look at the bus. The only places I go under mine if the bags are up is the very rear area. I can get out from that if it drops. Anyplace else, I roll her up on the boards and gain about 3.5" all along. It's enough I can get everyplace I've needed to. That's with the bags down.

I agree the best way to jack a unit is have it resting on suspension and not a frame. I have a old Benz with a jack that fits into a slot in any one of four receivers on side of the car. when you jack it up there is no chance of the jack slipping and since the jack is a screw, no chance of a leak down. This has to be the safest method ever.
