outside stair tread
Folks,
I need a flooring style material to reface the tread on my exterior air- step. Anyone have suggestions for suitable material? Thanks, David Brady '02 LXi, NC |

David, I have installed rubber stair treads on the steps. The outside rubber tread does oxidize some, but a wet rag will bring the luster back. I suggest going to a large floor covering store- Carpet One or Abbey carpet. These are full service facilities and have the overall knowledge of commercial applications. The big box stores, don't have a clue.
Google Roppe or Johnsonite and see if there is a distributor in your area.

I use a wrap-around plastic-type fabric that I got from Camping World. The thing wraps around the step and has some grommets and springs (underneath) that hold the fabric in place and tightly. Gives a slight door-mat effect when climbing up the steps.Â
The 'bird uses the larger of two sizes that are available from CW. As I recall, I paid less than $20 (on sale) to replace the cover that someone had previously installed on my coach. If the tread is seriously degraded due to ware or weather damage, then you'll have to get a new material from BB. My step is a rubber-like material that's similar to what's used in commercial busses (as are the first several inside steps).

David, Ralph, or anyone else w/experience,
Several years ago, I remodeled the entry on my Newell. I ordered stair treads from Blue Bird. I have the tan textured rubber step on my LXi. It had to be reglued but I'll keep it a while longer. I think I might cut a slab from a heavy rubber/felt entry mat at Lowes, Home Depot or WalMart and glue it down the next time. I have a lot of scratches on the corian risers which I may cover with stainless steel. Had to replace the deadbolt latch on my entry door. Ordered that from Blue Bird. The bolts and latch tongue were too short for the thickness of my door, but all I really needed was the adjustable-length latch which worked fine. Only thing, the wire that activates the latch from the keyless pad doesn't move back and forth. Compartment latches still work, but my deadbolt is key/manual for now. Another little annoyance. After replacing thesolenoid that locks and unlocks the tag, it's comeloose twice. Is the pin or mechanism a "wear item"easy to replace?Or, has anyone just bypassed it? My step was rusty.
Took it off and sent it to a marine welder. He made a new one in 305 stainless. 316 will rust. I then put the large mat that Camping World sells (the wraparound kind) over the step. Edges show and cover takes all the abuse. Bob Lawrence 84 PT36 In Boulder City, Nv for the next 2 months. |
