How do you open access panal

Hi,
I have a 1987 FC and I am trying to open the panal below the shifter at
the drivers left knee. I worked on an iginition problem and now my
headlights and turn siginals don't work. the headlight switch is good
and has power. I don't have power at the the upgraded headlight
selenoid. the selenoid is good. Hopefully there is a fuse, relay or
circut breaker behind the panal.

Hi Ron:

That panel is held on via some philips screws that are buried beneath
the carpet cover. Do alittle diging and you will find them. I
reattahced mine with 2 Stanley L brackets. Not high tech but makes it
easy to get in to that area. There are a bunch of relays and CB's
behind the panel. I am not at home and cannot remember what functions
are controlled via these devices. Part of it is for the ZF. Maybe the
Birdfather ( Bill Pape) will jump in!

Thanks for the compliment, (I Think) But I do not remember mating with
any Birds in the 60's and 70's ,, But one never knows?/?/

Ron, there is a screw buried in the carpet mid-point on the narrow
side of that panel, behind that panel is the ZF circuit board and
possibly a relay for the 12 Volt up-grade to the ZF Control board.

The headlight and the running light relays are forward of the brake &
throttle pedals, accessible from the outside front behind the grill and
the inspection plate above the driver headlight.

If both the headlights and the turn signals are in-operable you may
have two different problems, The headlights should work will ignition
OFF and the turn-signals with the ignition ON. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Also you mention an ignition switch issue,,,??,, Since you are an Ohio
neighbor , and probably pulling the Bird out of Winter Storage, I would
suggest starting at the 12 Volt source, Check the batteries, for dead
or shorted cells and re-dress the posts and grounds in both battery
compartments. That headlight switch is a problematic switch. Good to
carry a spare NAPA # HL6669.

Bill:

A definite compliment. In hot rodding we refer to some of the experts
as "rodfathers" I used some poetic license and coined the
phrase "Birdfather" Sounds good to me!!!

Bruce and Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I got the panal off, my problem was that I did
not use enough force. It was wedged in there pretty tight.I wanted to
look behind there because the previous owner had ran some new power
leads to the headlights.I got my headlights and turn signals working.
While I working under the dash I was checking a couple butt plugs
near the steering column. I did not secure them correctly.everything
is fine now. This is the first time in my 3 years of ownership that I
had to open up the dash. Hopefully I can keep hands out of there for
awhile!
