Toads & gas mileage

[Scott Forman]

I am considering setting up the wife's '07 GMC Acadia as a toad. Curb
weight is about 4800 lbs which is pretty heavy when I am used to towing
an old CJ5. Can I expect a mileage drop and if so, how much? Any
input from any of you pulling heavy toads or trailers would be greatly
appreciated.

Scott,

You really won't notice the diffrence. I pull a 24' car trailer. I
use it for the outdoor shows I go to and sometimes I haul a '99
Pontiac Grand Prix GT in it. I really don't see much diffrence in the
handeling or fuel consumption maybe 1/2 mile per gallon with or
without the car in the trailer from no tow vehicle at all . Besides
you've got the HOTROD of all Bluebirds the PT-38-8V92

I towed a CJ7, now tow a full size Bronco, no noticeable difference in fuel mileage. But I slowed down about 5mph when towing.

Funny you say that...I have always considered my bus a sports car
compared to the other coaches I have driven. My travel friends with
new SOB's can't keep up!

Scott We toad a 2007 commander (5000 lbs) this summer with our 1997 43' wanderlodge for over 6000 miles. Myfuel economy was about 7.5 MPG withspeedsbetween 55 to 65 miles per hour and most of the time at about 60 MPH. We alsodrove the coach from Florida to Michigan in April this year without a toad at about 65MPH,our fueleconomywas 7.5 MPG. An additional 5000 lbs vehicle to a 51,000 lbs motor homeis like a hair ona donkey tail not much of a effect. So sorry you left the Jeep family, but Enjoy the new GMC. I did not leave the Jeep family, I've had a couple dozen of them and
never go long without one. Best big boy toy around. But a CJ5 is
not the most practical thing to haul people and things in, so I'm
considering the GMC as a "practical toad" for the trips where I may
need such a thing.
