O.K. Greg. I'll look into tweeking. I do disagree with your position
on oil sampling. There is a lot to be learned about the engines
condition, even if it is after the fact. Patterns are the most important.

Thanks Michael. I'll do something about that.

When I got our bird outside of Nashville, I had to drive it back to
Seattle.
The rebuild had 200 miles on it. Called the rebuilder and was told,
drive it like Leroy stated...drive it like it was stolen.
It used oil about a gallon every 400 miles.
We now have 5 thousand miles on it since we retired last Nov.
When we left Seattle and now to here in Branson, about 3k miles
(detoured to Arizona for the winter), it has not used one drop of
oil. Still full.
That's with 40 wt oil.

that temperatures be monitored so as not to over heat the engine.
Since that is not possible, I suggest you monitor temperatures
closely on the return trip. It will get plenty of work from Canada to
TX so you will not be able to baby it. I always ran in engines on
aircraft and cars at full power. Don't personally know about a 8v92
but consider it in a boat. They are always under power. so what else
could you do. So I would guess you drive it like you stole it. But
then again, I am spending your money.

its good to have input on the amount of oil you will use while seating
the piston rings. I believe the sleeves get a crosshatch spinn
pattern scored with a hone on the fresh walls. as you break-in the
reman detroit, the piston rings polish the walls and kinda tune in
the rings. during break-in, everytime the piston goes up, oil gets on
the sleeve walls in the little crosshatch score marks and the fresh
rings wont squeegy the oil off as it comes down. this puts the
crankcase lube oil in with the diesel saturated air, then 'bang', the
oil gets burned a little at a time. soon the walls are smooth and
rings are true.
