Advice re Air System
Greetings All,
As luck would have it, I encountered my first problem with the air system on my 89 WB 40 the morning after Rita struck a glancing blow to east Harris County Texas. I have since been cleaning up the debris in my yard and discarding all the ruined food which resulted from an extended power outage and I have not taken any time to start research on the air problem. Any advice would be appreciated regarding the following symptoms. Background: The coach was in a storage building but the system and suspension were aired up due to my having left the aux air compressor on in preparation for a possible evacuation. The morning following the storm I planned to move the coach to my house to take advantage of the generator and AC. When I started the engine the system showed to be fully pressurized Symptoms: 1) When I depressed the brake pedal for the first time, I heard sounds associated with a large volume of escaping air. 2) The suspension will not dump and the step will not retrack. 3) The Low Air Pressure Alarm will sound after I pump the brake pedal for a few times. 4) I can not hear any obvious air leaks under the coach after the system airs up enough (minimum pressure) for the low air pressure alarm to quit sounding and the aux air compressor is running to provide additional pressure. 5) The suspension is not leaking down with (the aux air compressor is turned off) for a couple of days now. Advice re Air System
David,
Have a friend to help let him press the brake while you listen at the wheels to try and isolate where the leak is. Since you only hear the leak when you depress the brake pedal it sounds like it would be at the wheel area. Advice re Air System
Howard,
Under the heading of "believe it or not" the air leak was discovered to be a snap-in plastic air line formerly used in the "engine heated" hot water heater system. (This water heater was taken out of service by the former owner rather than repair a leak in the tank but the air pressure to the fill switch located underneath the bed was not disconnected.) The fact that the line blew off when I pressed the brake pedal may have been a coincidence. The leak was hard to detect due to being located under the bed with a thick mattress on top but it was plenty loud the first time when the air system was fully pressurized and the 1/4 inch line suddenly popped off and depressurized in the cavity where the water pump, etc. is located. I capped off this air line and now I'm happy to report that the suspension will dump as designed and pumping the brake pedal no longer rapidly depletes the air pressure. Thanks for your help.
