Need Some Help
Greetings everyone,
Well, to begin with after returning home from my sisters in VA, 20 miles from storage space I had a blow out in the left front tire... no damage to coach just tire and roughed up the rim... Today I went and had all new tires installed at the Tire Supply in the Bronx... Bus has got all new shoes... I noticed that on the previous trip that my speedo only worked intermittently, would work fine until I stopped for a break and when I took off again the speedo did not work... Is this unusual??? Probably explains why the hours are high in comparison to the mileage... Next, I ran the generator for about 10 hours straight, no problem worked fine, this morning when starting up coach it would not start... Oil level fine, water level fine, fuel level fine... Any ideas??? After getting all the tires replaced left the shop and put all switches on that needed to be on and when I went to use the retarder it did not engage, it did work on the way to the tire shop... What do you think??? Sea Ya Larry NYC 84 35FCSB ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Never Miss an Email Stay connected with Yahoo! Need Some Help
Larry:
Although not familiar with your bus, it could be a problem with a sending unit. I drive tour buses during the spring and summer months. On the VanHool coaches I sometimes drive, the retarder will cut-out if the speedometer acts up. They are equipped with Cummins M11 400 HP/Allison four, five and six speed. This may not be the situation with a BB - just thought I'd throw that out there for discussion. I'll watch for the responses and learn something about the BB FC. Need Some Help
I don't know how your system is set up. But, some people have noted that they
have a fuse for the retarder above the battery compartment (which on my 82 is near the left front tire). Perhaps the vibration from the blow out broke or dislodged the fuse. Need Some Help
Larry, sorry to hear about the blow out. Glad you are ok, kept
control and did not suffer any body damage. It could have been a whole lot worse. Just a lil info for ya. The previous owner had a blow-out on the way back to Mass from Myrtle Beach (home of the third annual BB rally) and I was told he bought one new tire on the road and replaced the rest when he got home. I guess he was at the mercy of what he could find on the road. Your retarder, it operates independantly of any brake controls, fuel pedals etc, it is not a "jake brake" it is actually a giant electro magnet. Slows the drive shaft down. First of all is your dash switch on? If yes, then I would go further into it. Maybe a relay is stuck, grab the wiring diagram. There are 4 relays in the big box under the coach beside the retarder, you can also check there, not only for a stuck/burnt relay but corroded wires. It is possible that if the switch is left on and the handle in one of the stop positions, it draws ALOT of current, I would check the above. They are pretty dependable units, and actually very durable, and yep real expensive. Grab the electrical diagram and check the path of wires, looking for blown fuses, stuck/burnt relays, and burnt wires. OH and working on your coach always check the grounds. :>) After that let us know. TIRES, Michelin/BFG plant is in Greenville SC (B Janes neck of the woods) and yes they are made in the same plant, and prolly the same assembly line. I find it hard to believe that they are the same compounds. Think about it. Need Some Help
Larry:
Been there done that one. Glad all is ok. Check the grounds for the spedo problem. Open the drivers headlight compartment and see if the ground strap is corroded. The gen set. Open the slide and on the entry door side, under the manifold, there should be a fuel shut off solenoid, see if it is pulling in when trying to start, if not then check for 12 vdc on the wires going to it. If power is present then you have a bad solenoid. If no power, then suspect a relay in the control box. Just a place to start.
