Greetings
Well, the name of the individual I bought my bird from is Art Brown.
Now, he denies any knowledge of the engines bad condition, but I
find that hard to believe. He said he changed the oil a few months
prior to my buying it but it hadn't been used much since then. I
heard what sounded like an exhaust rattle that was only there at
idle at purchase. I made note of it, and he agreed it was probably
the exhaust. It ran out fine, if smoking a little. I checked the oil
on the dipstick and it showed no sign of metal or carbon in it. The
only odd comment Art made was that I should probably change the oil
when I get it home, and the belts. When I took it to Cat, they
didn't know what it was either. At first they thought it sounded
like a fan hitting the shroud. Again, no big problem. It ran fine
out on the freeway for them too. At speed there wasn't much smoke
and no rattle could be heard. They spent about eight hours trying
to find out what the noise was and told me they couldn't find it. I
told them to go ahead and changeall the vital fluids then and just
check the valve lash...my best guess for the oil burning and smoke
under heavy accelleration. Well, as soon as they started draining
the oil everything started coming to light. There was metal in the
oil. There was even more in the filters. I had them drop the pan and
that's when they saw piston one was all tore up and what was heard
was piston slap.

So, that's the story. Tracked down a new(er) engine that was
reman'ed about five years ago and seems in pretty good shape. As
always though, it's hard to really tell without tearing apart the
entire engine! Keep your collective fingers crossed!

Greetings
Johsua,
You may not be able to bring your coach to the Blazing Star RV park in San
Antonio for the
Lone Star Birds rally, but they do have 1 or 2 bedroom cabins available. You
would be
welcome to join us at the rally to talk about Blue Birds if you are interested.
Rally date is
April 13 & 14 with departure on the 15th. There is no charge to attend the
rally other than
your cabin rental. Blazing Star RV park's reservation line is (877)387-5777.
Their website
is http://www.blazingstarrv.com. If you just want to stop by and chat for awhile,
that's OK too.
Send me an email if you're interested and I'll send you some rally information.
Regards, Eric in San Antonio
