12V dies when starter removed?
Hi everybody - Our starter died over the weekend and we pulled it out this morning. In so doing, I turned off the 12V system via the under-dash switch, then disconnected the batteries so there was no chance of shock in removing the starter. Reconnected the batteries, turned the dash switch back on, and... nothing. The inverter is still seeing the batteries and charging them, but none of the 12V systems have any juice. Greg, Is it possible that one of the cables you disconnected from the starter was actually a feed to the dash switch? I know my FC is 9 years older than your PT, but the design engineers might have been the same. My coach house is powered via the positive starter terminal, disconnecting power to the house when I removed the cables from the starter. I had to temporarily connect these cables with a bolt, washer and nut remembering to insulate with tape in order to get power to my rotary dash switch while the starter was removed. Greg, Like Donn said, be sure to insulate the bare starter cable from
any contact while starter is out. I wonder if the AT switch operates a solenoid??? and that solenoid lost coil power and needs to be offed/oned (turn off then back on). The AT switch is on the dash. Greg,
In its original configuration, all 12V circuits on the '85 PT40's were supplied via the stud on the starter. Some, including myself, have installed another supply line from the battery bank to the charger compartment, where most of the 12V distribution takes place, and bypassed this stud. You will probably have to reinstall the starter or install the bypass cable (4/0 min. size) to get around the stud and power the coach circuits. Greg, quite often starter motor damage is a result of cranking the
engine to a start on low charged batteries. what was the price for the reman starter? I use a company in Riverside called "Riverside altinator". A Big diesel starter rebuild is $185.00 to $250.00. I take them starters that show signs of problems via a bench test (hard to push start a dump truck). In a bench test you read the amp draw. Other shops charge $100.00 less but I dont think they even rebench test the completed product. Hey Gregory - Batteries are in good shape - were replaced a few months ago and have been almost continually under charge from inverter/charger since. However, the damage could have been building over time. I was quoted $450 for the reman. I was also quoted $900 for a new one, so that seemed a bargain. I hope I'm not paying through the nose - it wouldn't be the first time. Thanks for the referral to the shop in Riverside... I really don't want to start all over at this point as we should have the replacement in this morning. Thanks again!
