Wanderlodge Trivia Question
Where did the phrase "goat rails" originate, to describe the roof rails?

Wanderlodge Trivia Question
I thought I read on here once that it referred to an image of a bus in
a third-world country with poultry and small livestock on the roof, like we have all seen in movies. They are the rails that keep the goats that are lying on the roof from falling off. Wanderlodge Trivia Question
Actually , here in Mexico, the goats and chickens do not ride on the
roof. They are in the bus. Ask me how I know this?? They are referred to as chicken busses. Once in a while they are real Bluebird transit busss. Bruce 88 FC35 |

Or, the rail to tie the goat's rope to.
I note that the earliest Blue Bird WLs seem to have a "real" baggage rack with double rails that looks to be nearly a foot tall. So even the more abbreviated 'goat rails' on the coaches built in the 70s, 80s, and 90s are a streamlined version. The chicken & goats only ride inside the 2nd class busses. I rode a
couple of Mercedes Busses between Mex City & Oxacaca and they were great. The "Exucitivo"(?) 1st class had TV sets and served soft drinks.. Unfortuatly, I think the only tape they had was Kindergarden Cop, featuring our Gov. They loved him down there..But this was a few years ago.. Mike,
One possibility is the BlueBird engineere Mr. Geote' Rajhl who was credited with the Wanderlodge style made the functional design feature a recognizable trade mark for the bus. At RV shows across the county the Wanderlodge owners would unvail the bus to a clicking clock and announce to the astonished crowd that the bus was an original Geote' Rajhl. It was at a Texas RV show, "Houston Tractor and Campers 1964" that a newlywed local couple (Jack and Liz Something) coined the phrase we now have. "I think he said it has an origional goat rail? put in an origional washer and dryer then I'll buy one." Greg, I have long been a fan of "Fractured Fairy Tales" and "Hysterical History" on a Saturday morning! And Bruce's description of riding the Chicken bus brings to mind visuals of the scene of the bus ride to Cartegena in "Romancing the Stone". LOL! A good way to start any morning.... Speaking of the BB goat rails, some of us noted at the last Lone Star Birds rally that there was a fairly new Country Coach in the RV park with what appeared to be an excellent copy of the goat rails surrounding it's roof line. Too bad the Wanderlodges lost that unique trademark during the last two ownership periods......
