FC genset fan replacement?
I have made tremendous progress in lowering my FC generator noise
through re-insulating the compartment. While engine noise is greatly reduced, though, the noise from the radiator fan is still very pronounced, sounds like a turbo-prop at full throttle. Has anyone had any luck with replacing the stock fan with something quieter? Maybe a 12v replacement for the big 110v fan? I have seen the modification that relocates the rad to the bottom of the tray and uses a squirrel cage fan...hoping to not need that big a project. Would like to just replace the fan. Suggestions? FC genset fan replacement?
Think seriously about keeping the present fan setup but us a thermal
switch to turn the motor on and off when the temperature of the engine coolant gets to some preset temperature such as 200 degrees farenheit. The horton fan on my 1982 uses something similar although it is not adjustable. You can use a temperature control device similar to the one used for your freeze heaters in the coach. The generator box also needs composite sound proofing material staggered so that it muffles the sound of the generator noise as it leaves the compartment. Bluebird never used that technology when they designed the cavity. There is some good reading at http://www.soundown.com/ as to what is needed to properly muffle the sounds and heat. The lead core composite foam is what is needed in diesel engine sound deadening. You can buy the cheaper foam barrier material from JC Whitney etc but you will not get the sound deadening that you really need. This is definetly and area where you get what you pay for.
