You did say DIESEL!, right Mario? Ha Ha!
I don't have that problem but I can tell you where to look.

You have a 12VDC that is developed for the genset either by
a winding on the generator itself or with an external one
that is driven by the genset motor.

When you press the START button, a relay pulls in that applies
battery voltage to the fuel pump. When the generator speed is
adequate producing 12VDC and the button released, the generated
12VDC keeps the relay latched allowing the pump to continue
supplying fuel.

Check fuses, then the genset source of 12 VDC.

Mario, had starting problems last year stoped at Buddy Greggs was told
Perkins had it so I left. My local Mechanic suggested that likely she
was getting air in to the fuel and as a result did not start properly.
The fix was to replace the fuel filter and make sure the gasket was
seated properly. (This too had been done by "no longer my Buddy" and
they managed to twist the gasket.) Generater now starts and runs fine
ever since.
Good luck

My problem was losing the brushes against the armature.

Could be the low oil pressure or high temperature sending units have failed in
the 'off'
position. I believe holding the switch down bypasses their function. I think
you may be able
to test them by disconnecting them, although it's possible that when
disconnected, the lack
of a connection may tell the system to shut down the generator.

I just had a similar problem on my '79 diesel Kohler 8.5kw. It turned
out to be very simply a dirty fuel filter. I'd bought the rig
recently and the previous owner said it'd been recently serviced. It
turns out that all of my filters were a mess, but that's another
story. My gen ran too when I had the start button on, but it was only
because the starter was turning it over. Maybe this is unrelated, but
I figured I'd share my little experience.

Good luck! Mine is in the shop now and will be about $5k worth of
work when I get it out next week. Obviously there was a lot of other
stuff the previous owner didn''t disclose too, lol.
