Hi all,
hope I'm not repeating on the same forum, not at my own computer.
Just returned from a few days at the Oregon coast with the "White
Bird".
Had her in last week for an oil change, lube and service, and genny
service.....(Southern Oregon Diesel). After servicing the gen. they
couldn't get it to start and talked about various parts, solenoids,
fuel pump etc. I told them NO, it didn't need anything, was working
fine.. and was glad I had started it for them when I took it in.
After 9 hours with 2-3 different guys working on it with no luck they
finally replaced the fuel filter and it started right up. Apparently
the first filter they used was faulty and didn't create the proper
seal.....
Noticed when I picked it up there was a kind of lag when I started
the bird, hadn't ever been that way, figured it was because it had
been in the shop for a couple days unplugged. The lag continued after
driving and generator use (wondered about a ground wire or something
loose from the steer tire blowout I experienced coming home from Reno
last month)...the last morning at the coast the bird wouldn't start,
click click click. It turned out the be the battery connection was
loose at the main terminal. Apparently they forgot to tighten the
nut...had a call in for a jump or something when I finally found the
loose connection. Tightened the nut and we were on out way....
Geez, glad I didn't have to use another insurance service call...
One thing tho is our musical horn is only working intermittently,
figure there might be a loose connection somewhere. Haven't climbed
up on top yet to look. Any suggestions?
Other than the loose battery terminal the bird turned in another
flawless trip for us, love it!
We are getting 9+ mpg not figuring in the genny use.

I can relate to the generator problem...
Changed my fuel filter yesterday and after I did, it started but only to cut
off again. I took the filter back off and filled it with diesel, still would not
start..
Took each injector loose and cranked it and it finally started...air in the
lines...
Not the easiest connection to make on that fuel filter either...I must have
spilt a gallon of fuel trying to get it back on...(filling it back up each time
I lost some).

I no you cannot do your own basic maintenance. Your recent problem is why I do
my own basic maintenance. The shops are only as good as their employees and the
company's QC. I'll tell you this, no one touches my airplane, except myself and
my A&P partner. Can't pull off the road in a flying BB.
