Gone and done it
Hello everyone, hope your ready for a new season of travels and campfires
and maybe even rubbing elbows with some one who has a great BBQ sauce recipe you can steal, um I mean borrow, oh shoot, eat. Well Charolette and I have gone and done it. We just purchased a 2005 Jeep Wrangle X for a tow car. We have not had a tow vech for a few years and I finally got the Van ready for sale or trade in. I am in process of taking photos of the load leveling system I had for the trailer I had built and thus sold. And hopefully will get new Roadmaster Tow base plates for the Wrangle before long. I also have the tow base plates for our old Jeep Grand Cherokee that fits from "94 to "98 JGC's for the Roadmaster. Now then, I would like to open a thread on How those with Jeep Wranglers, Rubicon and such, wired the towing lights and with success. Did you use separate bulbs, or the diodes on the existing ones and which worked best for you. Ralph,
Congrats on the new toad. I don't have a Wrangler, but I have had two Jeep Grand Cherokees that I used the Blue Ox BX8869 Bulb and Socket Tail Light Wiring Kit to do the wiring. Quick and easy. It is a totally separate wiring setup with its own bulbs. That way you don't have to mess with diodes or tapping into the existing vehicle wiring system. And you get to remove it and re-use it when trading the vehicle. You could easily get the pieces to build you own kit, but it was only like $29 or so and it saved time running down piece/parts to DIY. By the way, I have a Blue Ox baseplate from my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee that could have a new home if anyone wants it. I have a 2005 Rubicon and the tail lights are wired separately from the vehicle electrics. Roger Webb 91 WL Mooresville, NC RWW

Ralph, Congrats on the new toad. You will love it. Barbara and I have had
aboout 8 different CJs & Wranglers. The simplest wiring system is to add another bulb in the tail light and wire it separate. No Hassles and very easy to do. I was really irritated about the expense and the PITA that the newer Wrangler base plates were. I don't know what youo intend to use for a brakeing system but simple is better. I have one and have never liked it. It is only because it is required that I have it. I sold the last Wrangler last year and went back to a Hummer H3 for a tow car. Cost 15% of whar the Wrangler base plate was and just as solid. Enjoy the new Jeep. They are fun. Hope to see you two soon. Congrats Ralph!! We treated ourselves to a
2011 Sport last summer. So far I think we have more off-road miles than on-road. Our tow bar system is Roadmaster. They should have brackets for your '05 no problem. For brakes I once again used the US Gear Unified tow brake. It served us perfectly on the '04 CRV so I installed the same setup on the Wrangler. Its not a cheap system, but it is relatively simple, reliable, and hidden out of the way. There is nothing to do to go from towing to driving except pop the "dummy" into the breakaway switch. The lights are completely independent of the Jeep's lights. I found a pair of LED brake/turn/running lights that are DOT approved and that fit the rear bumper. Running the wiring harness in the Jeep was for the most part easier than the Honda. The Jeep's brake lights also come on when the US Gear setup activates the Jeep's brakes. All the wiring for the US Gear brake and signal lights is in a single 7-conductor cable with the heavy-duty cast metal connectors at each end. The plastic connectors were the only downfall with the Honda system. There are +12 volt and ground conductors in the cable so the Jeep battery is always up at the end of a long tow. On all of these connectors I've had to spread the pins with a knife blade to get a reliable connection. Enjoy your Wrangler! Thanks to all who responded and I concur the best is separate lights and
leave the original alone. As to the BBQ sauce, well, hm, well I think it is how the sauce is applied that enhances the taste (wink) Ralph Safe travels, Ralph & Charolette Fullenwider '84 FC35 "Ruff Diamond" 2005 Jeep Wrangler X, towd Duncan, Oklahoma At 12:31 PM 4/30/2012 -0500, you wrote: >Hello everyone, hope your ready for a new season of travels and campfires >and maybe even rubbing elbows with some one who has a great BBQ sauce >recipe you can steal, um I mean borrow, oh shoot, eat. > >Well Charolette and I have gone and done it. Ralph, Here is another option. Go to Towmate.com and order a light bar. I like mine. You install a wireless transmitter in the back of the coach. It sends a signal to the light bar for brakes, turn signals and running lights. 100# magnets hold it to the roof of the toad. Similar to the light bars the wreckers use. Jack VDB
