Generator won't shut down - gen. set slide out
Just bought a 82 35FC. I have several issues most of them small. At
this time I am dealing with a perkins 12.5 gen. set that will not shut
down from inside the coach, starts fine, it will shut down from the
outside. Is this shut down with a fuel flow solenoid, if so is it
shut down from outside through the same solenoid? Where is this
solenoid located?

Slide issue. The slide is slow and sometimes will not extend, makes
it difficult to shut her down then Smile. Could this be a solenoid also
or maybe an air problem, it is a air slide system.

THANKS is advance.

Good morning Wendel:

The start/stop gen set switches inside are in parallel with the one on the
control box. In your 82 FC I think you only have the one remote switch in
the galley, perhaps one by the drivers area but not sure on that point.

If you hold the stop side of the inside switch for 10 seconds does the gen
set shut down then? And does the remote switch start the gen set? You can
be fighting corrosion on the connectors or a broken wire in a harness or
even a bad start/stop switch. You are going to need a multimeter or a toner
to trace the wiring for a break in the harness.

One needs a starting place so start at the end run and work your way back.
Open the control box and check the connections and the wire crimps in those
connectors. Inside the control box you should find a terminal strip and on
that terminal strip connections 2,3,4 are your start/stop circuits. The
stop should be terminal 2 and 4 is the common to both 2 and 3. 3 is the
start connection. The terminal strip should be wired like this, starting
with the left going to the right; the first is P or 12 vdc power then 1,
2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,20,34,38,53 you can tell the P by a wire going to the fuse
holder. You fuel shut off solenoid should be on the side nearest the entry
door and will be partially hidden by the exhaust header.

So you now have a starting place to start your trace. As to the slide, yes
it is air and you can try a couple of things there, first get a can of crc
oil from Napa or a can of 3 in 1 oil, do not use WD40, then on the cylinder
or on the valves, remove one air line and spray crc into the air line for
about 5 seconds, then re attach the air line and air up the system, the
incoming air will push the crc oil into the lines to the cylinder and lube
the o-rings, you can do the same on the air valve that is located inside
the frame on the far side or drivers side between the drive shaft and
exhaust. There are flow control valves on there as well but am not going to
go into that now.

Find your manual for the gen set and there should be a wiring diagram to
follow, suggest that you make a copy of that diagram in the book then put
your book away and work off the copy, it is going to get messy at times.
been there.

I had this problem with my old 79 FC-33. I think you will find the
slide runners and bearings are full of dirt. I used a power washer with
hot water to flush all the old dirty grease and crud out and then used
graphite grease to relube the tracks. It worked great after.

My '81 31' FC had the same problem but it was not the slide track, it was the
air cylinder. That air cylinder can be rebuilt rather inexpensively.
