Generator Battery not charging?

I have had this gremlin for some time now. I have posted before and
received much information and help on the Solenoids under the Air step
all three ok wires ok, Solenoid in generator compartment ok but I
can't find the diode that is suppose to be somewhere up front left
that allows current one way I think. Where is it on a 1985 pt40? What
does it look like? There is a panel of sorts in the area that has the
battery, there are a bunch of wires coming off of terminals and there
is a Bosch 1x1x1 black square that has a couple of wires connected
just below this board about a inch is this the Diode? When I use the
aux bat switch it does click and will start the main engine when
depressed and will increase the starting of the generator when that
bat is low. I need to find the diode and check it out and then further
check the solenoids. The generator bat will just not charge off of the
battery chargers.

The diode is in the charger compartment on my 86 PT38.

Look in the PHOTOS section for my album titled "PT Gen Batt Charging"
where you will find pictures of the setup on my '85 PT40. The diode
and a circuit breaker are located in the Rediline compartment, below
the shelf where the original battery chargers were mounted. In my
case, the generator battery boiled dry, which cooked the relay under
the step, and the circuit breaker in the rear compartment. The diode
is visible in the close-up photo, on an angle bracket to the right of
the relay and circuit breaker.

Perhaps yours is similar to mine?

It is in the rear battery compartment. It is about the size of a quarter studs on each side

Mine is mounted on a L shaped piece of metal attached to the frame just inside the door. Your problem sounds just like mine and replacing the stud solved the problem. Keep in mind I have a 86 PT40 and knowing BB yours could be in a different location. But I would think the diode would be the same, about the size of a quarter with studs on each side.

Ok I replaced the the breaker need to get the diode to replace it,
quick question the breaker connects to the diode, is the diode on the
bat or aux of the breaker or does it matter? It was on the aux side
on the old one.

John:

You do not have to put another diode in if you do not desire, you caninstall a solenoid instead and it would do basically the same thing. Have the solenoid turned on when you turn the ignition switch on.

One thing to remember as well, there is a 0.6 volt drop across the diode and then the length of wire so it could be 1 volt lower at the generator battery vs the remainder of the battery system. If you were to install a solenoid, then you would not have the 0.6 volt drop but still the length of wire voltage drop.
