It's only 30 years old!

Stopped by our local Bluebird distributor here in Phoenix to pick up a
new Tach for my dash. They informed me the tach was no longer
available for a 1978 Bluebird. I asked when they stopped using this
tach and he said in the late 80's. So that's only 20 years old. You'd
think if they're going to build a bus to last over 50 years they'd
think about supporting them for more than 20? Bet I could get a dash
part for my 20 year old car??? So what do you do now, After market?

Mike,

I you like to tinker I have repaired two BB tachometers. Both suffered from fractured solder connections around the area where the jumpers are located to set the pulse rate. If you want to replace it look in a good marine store. They have tachometers for diesels that have lower rpm ranges. Most of the tachometers around come from Teleflex who also made a lot of the originalBB gauges.

Thanx for the advice Chuck. However, I have an empty hole in the
dash so I'm not sure what happened to the original? When I look at
the marine tachs they are mentioning "number of poles". Any idea how
our sending units are setup on the 3208's?

Michael,

There is a sending unit driven from the camshaft. Most Tachs are adjustable, in fact that adjustment is usually where I find the problems. I have the dash out of our BB right now doing some other work so I will look at the tach tomorrow and see how it is set. I got a replacement sending unit from Teleflex a few years ago and it worked with our existing tach so I am sure that they make a tach that will work with it. If you have a oscilloscope or a digital meter that will display frequency you can use it to check the sending unit by connecting it to the signal leads at the tach location.
