question for the group for clarity
Hi guys/gals

This board is a wealth of information especially for wannabees like
me. I am sure everyone gets tired of the same question: what are your
opinions on this bird or that bird. For the veterans you may not
realize the great service that actually is to us and the willingness
to go by and look at a bird helps greatly too. Ok now that I made
everyone feel good. I am looking at the one that is listed on 1982 on
rvtraderonline.com for 17.5. I know this will be a project bus which I
can live with as I have plenty of time and short supplies of steady
monies. I have up loaded the pictures that I have been sent.
http://tinyurl.com/gpc58

The bus is in Lakeland Fl. Based on the pictures unless someone here
can tell me different I think he is way of base on the 17.5

Here is the link to the ad http://tinyurl.com/kxymn

Before I go any further and ask this group for advice or opinions, I
read in one of Harvey's older comment sections I have even forgotten
what year it was from now. The comment was about the right kind of
bird people perhaps I am not "the right type bird person" and if not
that ok just somebody have the common decency and tell me. Do I have
30- 40 k sitting in a bank somewhere –no do I own a lot of stock – no
the house-not mine. My investment for my motorhome bluebird or not
somewhere around 17-19k –back pay due from the VA and SSA. Did I allow
my wife to stay home while the kids were in school-yes do I realize
that 25-30 year old buses need attention-yes can I do it all at
once-no will I have to save for some of it –yes Does education
count-MBA Have your career end at 46-that me. So if I do not qualify
as a bird person please let me know an perhaps this information will
be useful to others as well.

question for the group for clarity
Hello Hugh:

The "right kind" of Bird people? Having a Bird is not about wealth, life
status or any of the rest of the baggage of that ilk. Birders come from all
walks of life and too many varied situations. No, what a Birder is, for the
most part, is someone who is a knob turner, wrench holding type of person.
Owning a Bird is much more cost effective if one can do much of their own
maintenance. These Birds are ageing, and parts that were used to build them
are, at times, obsolete, no longer available, so we simply have to modify
and up grade those systems. Once a Bird owner gets into that mind set, and
understands that fact, then they become the "right kind" of Bird owner. Not
everyone is up to that task.

I hope this answers the last part of your post. As to the first part, this,
and other Forums were started because of those many issues above. We try to
help each other in sharing situations or fixes or parts or what ever, so
the old adage, well throw a part at it, is kept to a minimum erg money
spent is puts that person in the right area rather than 180 degrees out. It
helps a Bird owner if he/she is a tinker type.

Hope this helps,

Safe travels,

question for the group for clarity
HUGH, HUGH... Hold on right there about the "right type" of
person...you and I have spoken and discussed these forums and their
value. I will tell you this.. there is more knowledge to be gleaned
from this group than one can fathom, the forum members that offer
information generally do so unselfishly..Generally speaking 90+% of
the members of these forums will stop what they are doing to offer a
hand and give their opinions. MANY ON THE FORUMS have become great
friends of ours..we are very lucky for that. This group is truly an
amazingly.."wanderful" group of folks. I am sure you will fit right
in.

Hugh, there are many here that would come running to help Judi, or
others for that matter, if something were to happen to me while on
the road..

FRIENDS LIKE THAT ARE HARD TO FIND...ACQUAINTANCES ARE A DIME A DOZEN

NOW there are some of the "snootie poots in BB crowd" that wish that
this whole internet crowd would just go away...I have met some, sat
in their 450's to have an informed discussion, only to find out it
did not mean anything...TOTAL WASTE OF MY (read MY) time...
Afterall, the internet crowd the drink beer, box wine, belly laugh,
help each other fix their BB (not taking it to the dealer so as to
brag about $$)and generally look like they have a hoot of a time
while making great friendships..

Hugh, you won't see the snootie poots here...they lurk and are from
Oregon or such places, in charge of committes (aka boys clubs).etc
They discuss our forums at their $1000.00/weekend rally for something
to have to discuss. They won't post..they would rather e-mail each
other to "discuss the goings on here" DID YOU SEE THAT...ETC..

So Hugh "ask away on the questions, and advice we all did/do.

question for the group for clarity
Hugh,

As far as being a BB owner? The other posts before mine will tell you.. We
are all different, in the same family. I have only been on the forum and BB
owner for 3 months now. Boy, what I have learned about it in that time! (and
money spent (I don't have!!) I'm 31, have owned several travel trailers,
pop-ups, and a class A- Fleetwood southwind. One day hope to have the old
bird up and running enough to go to a rally somewhere! To meet these great
people someday! I have already met one person and made a trip to the east
coast to meet him, and see the bird'. He was fantastic! His name is Tim
Hannink, from Winter Park. He has a 81 bus like mine, except a 35 Footer. I
would like to have a face with these names I hear all the time ..lol . They
will help out a lot. My bus (and most) is a project.. (not as much as this
blue one, thank GOD!)

I have already called about this bus, last week for a friend. It is at a
shop in Tampa getting work done. He filled me in about some of the details.
My friend is looking for one. After our conversation, I decided this bus was
not for him. He wants something 'original' not altered.. This one would be
an example of definitely 'not original'!!

I will tell you what he told me about it:

Over 100,000 Miles (didn't tell me exactly)

Needs all 6 tires ($2500.00 - 3000.00)??

It is in Tampa currently getting air suspension worked on..(good thing!)-
Air bags, ect.

Not original paint.. has been painted, possibly not good-

He has owned it for 4 years.. Old man before him

Been on line for sale for around a year..

12.5 Diesel Gen works great he says?? Shop also repaired it.. I called the
shop it's at to speak with them

Overhead Panel/cabinets were all removed.. along with electronics. It was in
his plan to rebuild a custom wood 'entertainment center' above, to enclose a
new big TV. Which is not a bad thing.. you would have to sort through all
the wiring though. Could be A JOB! Where are the original electronics from
above? I would ask for them. Stereo, Compass, amps, TV, Safeline, ect..

Based on the pics on the link.. I observed the following:

Fridge was replaced with apartment style.. (:-()

Middle and Bottom of dash tore out??

Furniture missing behind pass seat?

Headliner replaced? Blue? not factory I don't think.

Looks like damage to upper cabinet ends that came in contact with roof? Or
could be messed up from roof leaking- being replaced.

Blue bird monitor panel replaced in galley..??

Cabinets replaced above sink with something white?

Personally, not for me. -Or my friend for that case-

Everyone looks for something different in a coach. For this owner, it may
have been ok :-). Someone like me, I would pass :-(..

There are many out there.. for your price range. You may have to do some
research.. I had to drive 1 hour north of Atlanta Ga to get mine, and drive
it all the way back to FL without knowing if it would make it! Well, she
did, thank god, without even blinking. I made sure she has coolant, oil and
tranny fluid, and went on down the road! All in 20 degree weather.. CRAP!!

If there are anything else I can help with, let me know!

Hugh,

You will fit right in , Get your hands dirty,
But there are better deals out there,
I would run far away from this coach, ( Bill's Opinion )
Any old coach will take $ 10K TO $15000 over the next couple of
years. But you could start with a bus in better condition.

IT is a lot of fun and you will have a solid reliable motorhome
when completed.
