Do Not Shift light
She started just great then noticed "Do Not Shift" light was on, on the
shift selector. Never seen that light before. Looked in the blue book
and found no reference. Checked all the fluids and jacks, but found no
problem. Has anyone had this problem before? Would appreciate any
input. We were about to pull out for the Lone Star BB rally.

Do Not Shift light
Rick and Terri,

This has happened a few times with my BB too. Always while driving, and when
trying to upshift from 1st to 2nd. There is some kind of microprocessor with
the Allison trans, and my handbook says to turn the motor off, removing power
from the trans computer, and re-starting which allows it to "re-boot", for the
lack of a better term. Each time this happened to my BB, the problem corrected
itself after turning the bus off, waiting a minute or so, and restarting. If
the problem persists, I recommend it being looked at by an Allison repair
shop....they might be able to read the codes from the blinking light below the
shift buttons.

Good luck...

Do Not Shift light
Rick and Terri,

The "do not shift" light on a Allison transmission
indicates one of the sensors has determined a "fault"
significant enough to potentially cause damage to the
transmission. That fault could be as innocent as "low
sump temperature" or not so innocent.

If it were to occur while the coach was in a gear,
likely the transmission would lock itself into a
single gear (the "limp home" feature) wherein you
could drive to a safe location off the main highway or
to the nearest repair facility. However, under that
condition, were you to shift to, or through, Neutral,
or shut off the ignition, the coach would not again
enter a driveable gear and it could be "tow-truck
time." (Some will add you could "re-boot" the
transmission, but that action might eliminate the
chance for repairs under warranty, and usually removes
the codes from computer memory...)

If the coach is not in gear (apparently your
situation) there will be one or more "codes" recorded
in the transmission control module memory indicating
the source of the problem(s), providing you don't
clear them, or re-boot before you "read them out."
They are "read" by the series of red and amber light
flashes, depending upon your model of Allison. As
each Allison is slightly different I'd suggest going
to the Allison site to download the "codes" or to one
of our Forum friends here, to get a copy for your
model. The Allison folks usually present seminars at
the Rally in the Vally where they distribute the
"code" information, and explain the details.

There are other diagnostic methods to include the
SilverLeaf software VMSpc which can be used should you
want to explore it in the future.

Rick & Terri,

Same thing happened to a friends '87 PT40, shutting down and
restarting as Kevin suggested resolved their problem and it has not
done it again. I wouldn't worry if this was a one time occurance and
the shutdown reset it. JMHO.

-John,
Thank you for your reply. On the trans. test button where you check
for your code, there is no lights coming on. Have checked and
cleaned all battery
connections.
Best

Kevin, Thank you
for the information . We have started and restarted with no look.
There is no lights flashing to be able to read codes.

Do Not Shift light
Sounds like a one-time issue that may not be
significant. If it occurs again, you can take
appropriate action.

Good Luck

Do Not Shift light
I had the Do not Shift light come on with a buzzer but it went out
before I had a chance to exit the freeway. Last month I sent the bus to
a DD / Allison shop to have the codes read and have an expert do the
trans service , drop the pan, cut the filter, check the retarder, do a
road test. I was told; "the codes get erased when the bus is shifted
into reverse therefor , no codes" "The trans does not have a
retarder" "The oil and filters looked good" "will that be debit or
Credit" I am not convinced the $100+ per the hour tec gave me my
$500.00 worth or info and service. I want to find time and visit
another shop and see if they think the codes are stored.
