Experience with Portable GPS Units?

I am contemplating purchase of a "portable" GPS unit for use in our coach. I am
concerned as
to whether or not it will operate inside our steel "skin" and with our straight
up and down
windows. The unit picks up the satellite from the rear of the GPS receiver. I
can not try it
first, as sellers will not allow return if unsuccessful. Thus, I ask the forum
if you have any

Gery,
I used my Garmin etrex to check speedo accuracy. Had to put it on the
drivers side window ledge and it did ok. It took some time, more than
usual, for the unit to get the satellite signals.

I have the Microsoft Streets and Highways program for my notebook. The GPS
antenna attaches inside the windshield with a suction cup and receives multiple
satellites. System works great in the FC.

We have one that sets on the dash in front and as close to the windshield as
possible and it is only marginally successful. It seems it fails to receive
enough "birds" just when you need it most.

On our last WL I had roof mounted a GPS that only had a serial port for the
computer. That particular unit is no longer available and they don't have any
plans to make the "replacement" USB ended. So we would stuck using the very old
computer as it has a serial port. The new ones do not usually.

Sooo, I'm still looking. For good coverage I think it is important to mount the
unit on the roof or at least outside, that worked great for us before.

Not sure what you mean by "Portable GPS" unit, but I use my
Garmin,III+, (with the regular antenna) that I mounted with velcro on
the dash, in front of the steering wheel. I use it as a speedometer,
and I have always gotten good signals. However, I use the 12V car
cord, as it eats AA batteries quite fast!!
We also use the "Co-Pilot" attached to the laptop for navagation.
Just place the GPS unit in front of the A/C outlets.. Works fine!!

Jack, I use exactly the same equipment , however, I mounted
the antenna's with sticky stuff on the inside corned of the windshield
for wider coverage and never lost the signals. The corner gets
more satellites...

Gery I have a Magellan SporTrak Map. I turn it on and within a minute or
two it has located all the satellites it needs and starts feeding me data
on it's screen and on the wife's laptop.

Gery,
I have used my Garmin Street Pilot 2610 with an external antenna
(27C) held by suction cups to base of windshield in front of dash for
over a year with good results. With external antenna I can put unit
near front edge of dash for easy viewing. Accuracy gets down to 10-
15', and it can be unplugged in a couple seconds and installed in
dingy for exploring.

The GPS units will work fine up on the dash. They can't get all the
satellites, but they get enough to do the job. I've been using a
Garmin Street Pilot III for several years now.
