Need Help With 12 Volt Water System...

I also had my outside switch go bad. Don't know why it went bad- just 23
years old. I was forrever hunting down that probleem. Erniie-83pt40 in Texas

My water pump runs and pumps water, but very slowly. I could not find
any leaks or lose connections. It seems like the pump does not prime
it's self for some reason. The pump will run constantly.

I'm digging into it now. Does anyone have any advice to offer?

A couple thoughts. Does your Bird have the 12v water tank fill switch
that controls a Sporlan valve...that switch might be set to 'fill' and
should be set to 'off'...or the Sporlan valve is filled with junk and
needs to be cleaned out.

Thanks for the reply, Curt.

I don't think it's a switch as it has worked properly for a long
time and I have not thrown any switches or turned any valves.

What I have discovered is that when I run the pump water begins to
exit out ot the water tank over flow.

I do not know what a Sporland valve is, however something being
fouled by junk is a possibility.

Could you expand on your thoughts for me so I can look for that
valve?

A Sporlan valve is a 12V flow control valve. From what you have said I
don't believe you have that valve in your coach.

Here's another thing...

When I put city water into the commercial intake, water immediately
starts to run out of the water tank overflow. I may be wrong but
the over flow appears to come out of the hot water tank. Does that
make any sense?

There is a pressure relief valve on the hot water heater overflow.
Maybe it popped open and didn't seat itself. I think you should be
able to tap the stem of the overflow valve and see if that makes a
difference. The valve is mounted directly to the heater and the
overflow pipe is attached to it.

If you need it, look in the "Files" for the Sporlan Valve document
that gives diagrams, parts numbers and instructions on repairing them.

Hello, Dave!

I found the pressure relief valve. There is what looks to be a plug
coming out of the end of it. I rapped lightly on it with a bearing
hammer but no luck so far. Is the valve internal, or would I see
the end (plug looking thing) retract if it seats?

The bus is running great. I have more fun driving in this 'Bird
than I would in a Ferrari. Honestly. Drove 163W this morning in 95
degree heat, went up some major uprgrades, and the old 'Bird never
flinched, stayed nice and cool and ran strong all day.

Thanks again for selling me such a nice Wanderlodge. Practically
everyone that sees it stops and stares as if they were looking at a
space ship from Mars!

Oh well, back to do some more plumbing work.

Sounds like a fill valve like Curt said and sounds like the water is
comming out of the overflow for the fresh water tank. If your
hotwater drain is open, the drain will run when you turn the 12V pump
on. The 12v Pump wont push water out of the tank overflow because it
takes and replaces it.

The water is drawn from the fresh tank by the pump, then the pump
pushes the water in the plumbing pipes to pressurise the system. The
Freshwater storage tank (FWST)is a appliance connected to the
presurized system. If the fill valve is open the FWST will be trying
to fill up but it is using the water it takes from the tank. This
Recycling will not allow pressure to build so other appliances like
sinks will only show a trickle. You may see other Motorhomes have a
tank fill port for the fresh water and another one for city water
port. MY BB has one hookup for citywater and I must flip a electric
switch to open the valve on the FWST appliance when I want to fill
the tank.

If it is a FillValve. the Sporlan Valve in my 94 is under the bed
which is behind the fill port. The valve is a diaphragm type and
requires water pressure to close it off (much like a sprinkler
valve). When the bus sits without a city hookup and/or pump pressure,
the valve floats open and debris or calcium builds up on the
diaphragm this will not allow it to seat and close. The valves are
called "normal closed" but it is not passive. You need a charged
solenoid to open it up (toggle fill switch). The valve may differ on
your coach

When this happened to me I hooked up to city water and flipped the
fill switch several times while the tank was filling. It worked but
later JM cautioned me of waterhammer damage from a quick close. In
the future if I need to flip flip the switch under pressure, I will
open a sink valve in the coach
