Tow Capacity for PT 35

Can a PT - 35' 6V92 tow a 10,000# trailer including contents? I would
like to be able to tow my 24' trailer which has a GVW of 10K#. I am
looking at a 1983 PT - 35' at the present time, but will pass if it
will not take the towable load.

I do beleave it a little to munch weight for the 6v92. I use to pull
a full size pickup i found that to be bit much.Can it do it yes it
can.Pulling long grades will be slow going.A bird with a 8v92 would
be much better for a heavy load.

I had good towing experiences with my 6V. Ralph can testify about
trying to follow me uphill coming out of Buckhorn Lake Resort. My
1983 PT40 with the 330hp "Silver" 6V92 towed my Jeep Grand Cherokee
like it wasn't even there. I towed my Corvette drag car on a 24'
total length open bed trailer with no problems whatsoever. Kept the
camera on to make sure it was still there! The PT35 will have a
slightly better power-weight ratio than the PT40. Also, I had the
3:73 rear in my PT which made a difference.

Mike McMahan towed his drag Vette plus spares in a 24' box trailer
with his 1982 PT40 with the 300hp "red" 6V92. He had the 3:36 rear in
his PT. Maybe he will check in on this thread with his experience. I
do remember he had to beef up the tow hitch.

Will the 8V be better than the 6V? Oh yeah! Will the 6V do it? I
think so. Gears will make a difference however.

Performax race car trailer fully loaded with a 3400# Corvette drag
car, numerous spare parts, golf cart, air compressor, generator.
tools, etc. I raced all over the United States including Denver, Co.
The accelration towing or not was not a lot different unless you were
climbing a hill. The bus did struggle a little with a full load of
fuel and water. I found that if you ran with a half a tank of fuel
the bus handled the load better. The real issue seemed to be
cooling. I ran with te aux fan switch on most of the time and the
coach ran at about 190, but running the fan draws some horsepower. I
don't believe that the cooling system is designed for that much of an
additional load but it can be done. I drove the 82 about 100,000
miles mostly towing the trailer.

On a PT 40 with a 24' trailer you are very close to 65' which I
believe is the max legal length in some states. I believe there is an
exemption in the length for an auto hauler. I carry a copy of this in
my bus. I have never been stopped for this reason however.

My 89 PT40 8V92 4 speed trans definitely has more power but is heavier
than the 82. It also tows extremely well.

Either coach will do the job. Be sure to not exceed combined GVW or
hitch capicity.
