steer tire blow out

steer tire blow out
Hi fellow birders,
Just returned home from a trip to Reno and back. The "White Bird"
turned in another flawless trip...
Altho had a bit of an adventure when the driver side steer tire
exploded....(sounded like a cannon!)
We were very lucky, no one was in the opposite lane or directly
behind when this happened. It pulled me into the opposite lane,
fortunately was able to keep it on the road and get back over to the
correct lane and off to the side of the road.
The tire was less than 2 years old and not sure why it blew.
Of course we were in the middle of nowhere, high desert out of
Susanville California.....no cell phone coverage. Even 911 wouldn't
get out.
No one hurt, the coach not a bit damaged (just knocked loose a very
small amount of the insulation in the wheel well!) Didn't damage the
rim...or tear up anything.
My 85 year old mother and 10 year old grandson and I spent the day in
perfect comfort of the coach, genny supplying the air conditioners
power, playing scrabble and yahtzee.
A California fire chief stopped and drove me about 15 miles til a
cell phone would work, called progressive and they took care of
getting a tire to us. Of course this was on a Sunday....about dark
help finally arrived and we were able to get back underway.
Wish I had signed up with FMCA before the trip. They would have paid
for the tire!
Anyway, thanks to all I have learned on these sites, I knew not to
jam on the brakes, slowly brought the speed down and got into the
correct lane, then off the road. (2 lane highway).
The only reason we came away with no injuries, deaths or damage was
LUCK that there was no oncoming traffic....
The tire fellow and fire man were amazed I kept it on the road....

Great job Rose Mary, thanks for sharing it with us we all need to try and
remember not to hit brakes with a blow out. Again great job. What brand tire and
load rating are you running? Have you checked pressure in other steer tire?

It was a Cooper Load range G ,
I think there was some belt separation happening as I left Reno , as
it wasn't handling 'right', thought much of it was the truck rutted
road now I think it was the tire. (I fueled up at Sierra Cids in Reno
($3.04) amazing, everywhere else was 3.21 +.)
The tires/pressure were checked before leaving my brother's place
that morning.

My thought is the tire may have suffered an injury when the coach was
driven to Oregon, by my oldest brother after my little brothers
death. He said it drove like a #####! + the passenger steer blew out
on him.....he replaced that one with a toyo like the rear tires.
Later found the front air bags hadn't been working correctly....so
think that is why the tire blew on him....duh...

I had the air bags front valve replaced before we took it anywhere
and feel very comfortable driving it. He said he didn't care to, so
think he must have made that long trip with no front air (can you
imagine how awful of a ride that would have been?!)

All the other tires are Toyo's and this service company only had
Goodyear. The tread matches ok but would feel better if the steers
were the same brand or does it matter?

Rose'mary,
Luck not, Was knowledge - skill - tenacity. No harm using an
unoccupied lane to better gain control. Luck would be not having a
blowout.

I run load range H on my steer tires. I think the G tires are too marginal
for the weight on the front of an FC. I had a similar blow out on H range
Michelin 6 years old on passenger side. South Texas 95 degrees highway 90
in the middle of nowhere One bar on the cell phone got me to Good Sam and a
tire (load range G) was delivered and installation started in 45 minutes.
Changed to a Load range H when we were back home.
