What is the life expectancy of the holding tanks and propane tank? How
often does the propane tank need to be inspected? I know if my propane
grill tank has rust or is over 5 years old they won't fill it unless it
is inspected.

Gardner: I do not know the technical answer if there is one. Someone may. I
cleaned minor surface rust from my tank, used ospho to treat it and repainted it
with high quality engine paint. I haven't had any refill problems, and do not
have rust.

Leroy,
Thanks.
If I purchase the coach I am looking at this time, that will be
one of the things I will put in the 'must do' list. Do the fill
stations actually check the tanks when they fill an RV? I would
think it would be a legal requirement.

My understanding is that the ASME tanks don't require recertification like the
grill tanks do. Of course if they see something that could be dangerous when
you have the tanks refilled, they should not fill them and inform you of the
problem.

Leroy,
I was checking and, as expected, a horizontal tank for an RV is slightly
more than a vertical one.
Vertical 40 gallon—79.95
Horizontal 9.8 gallon--$420 (on sale)

I will check more listings, but I think it’s pretty clear it will be
expensive if needed.

Do you really think you will have invest in a new tank?
the tank on our 77 is original still holds propane and we expect to
get a lot more years out of it and ours certainly holds more than 10
gallons more like 35-40 dependent on the weather

Stephen,
I am not sure. I only looked at the tank, I didn’t try to physically
check how deep the rust was. It is just a mater safety more than anything
else. If it ruptured, 40 gallons of propane could be a pretty nasty
explosion.

Gardner:
I don't have my book in front of me but I think my tank is around 49 gallons.
Unless the rust is really crazy I do not think there is a problem. Since I
converted to diesel fired Hydronic heat I have enough propane for 2-3 years. My
gas fires the outside grills (2) and the stove. That's it.
