30 AMP OPS
Recently I stopped overnight and had to use 30amp park power. I carry
a cable for that purpose but have never used it. 30amp gave me leg two in the coach but did not go through the Trace inverter to charge the batteries. Looked at my diagrams with no luck. I may need to get a 50amp female recepticle for the end of my 30amp cord, plug it into the normal 50amp line and see what happens. Doesn't make sense that the factory 30amp bus connection does not charge the batteries. Is this normal? Leroy Eckert 1990WB40 Niceville, FL |

I don't think it is .... at home, I only have a 30 amp connection and
my batteries are charging fine. However, my coach does not have a stock arrangement as it has a Link 2000-R interface that controls the battery charging from the inverter. The 30 amp connection will give you only one leg of your power ... but it should be the leg with the charger! Pete Masterson aeonix1@... Hi Leroy,
Can't say for sure regarding your coach, but typically the system is designed so that the 50 amp power cord will draw power from 2 legs of shore power and will power the two legs of the coach respectively - that is, until you plug in the auxiliary 30 amp plug. When any power is sensed from the 30 amp aux, one leg of the 50 is lifted/disabled and the newly sensed 30 is substituted for it. Therefore, if you only used your aux, as I gather, you only fed one leg - the other leg was waiting for you to plug a 30 amp adapter into your 50 amp cord, power it, at which time you would have both legs. In the future, to avoid the problem and to receive power on both legs, plug a 30 adapter into your 50, power this 30 and do not use the aux 30 at all. The point of having the aux, is to permit use of two separate campground pedestals of 30 each for total of 60 amps. We we speak of 50, we really mean 50 on each leg, for total of 100 amps to the coach. Hope this makes sense. Hey John, Leroy, I am not sure about your newer coaches but could you
not use the "dog bone" and have the power both legs? John if I read your post right congratulations man that was quick! 30 AMP OPS
Leroy, I have the same problem and I think the 30 single pole should
charge the batteries. I wondered what leg the original chargers were hooked up to. My charges are after-market and the remote location has a receptacle that shares the leg only supplied by 50 amps. I plan on adding or moving the C breaker for the charger receptacle to the 110 leg that get power on both 30 and 50. For now what I do is plug the chargers into an extension cord that I then plug into a working receptacle in the bay. If every thing is on the other Leg you could simply switch legs at the breaker box input. 'Hotwater heaters' and 'chargers' are automatic on and off and it is hard to regulate your draw on amps. If you have both units cycle on at the same time, you may risk tripping a breaker (tripping is only annoying, not a danger). It would be nice to have a Charger switch by the HWheater switch. When you get back out to Riverside I have 50 amps waiting for you. Hi Scott,
Many BB's are wiring in the manner I described so a dog-bone splitter is unnecessary. Could you use one? Yes, but why go to the expense? If I understood the questioneer correctly, he was using the auxilary connection only, not the main (or so called 50amp) connection, or both (which is the design). What is important for folks to understand is, on later model birds, this "auto-sensing" takes place, with an inadequate explanation in the owner's manual as to what actually happens to the second leg. The gentleman was not charging because the Bird assumes the "main" source of power will always be the main connection. I'd be willing to bet, when BB engineered the sensing, the group didn't consider an owner might "only" power from the aux, or they would have built-in a "dual-sensing" ability which would lift the one leg only when two power sources were present. And yes, this will be our first time since 1966 we will be without a coach of some kind, and 20 years of Birds - hopefully, for only a year. We planned on home selling in a year or so, not a week. Big scramble into a rental until we can buy or build another home. Gosh, the stuff/junk we've accumulated! All wanderlodges that I have seen have one 50 amp plug and two 30 amp
plugs. The 50 amp plug serves both leg one and leg two (with the main switch set to shore 50). One 30 amp plug serves the drivers side of the coach and the other 30 amp plug serves the passenger side (with the main switch set to shore 30). On the forward controls the drivers side 30 amp plug serves the chargers and on the PTs the passenger side plug serves the chargers. To ensure that you can charge using 30 amps just make sure you are plugged into the correct 30 amp plug. Pete, on my coach, all I use is the 50 amp cords. In fact, Bim Burt and I
built some nice 30 amp extension cords from old Bluebird 30 amp power cords. I always am very aware of power management when I'm using my 50 amp cord and plugged into less then 50 amps. My 84 had ALL the good gauges to tell me how much I was using. Since we don't have those now, we have had a pretty good learning curve on power management. 30 AMP OPS
I guess my coach (being "newer") has evolved. It only has a 50 amp
connector. Everything else is reached by adaptors on the 50 amp connector. At my home, I actually have 220 v 30amps available ... but I had to use 100' of extension cable to reach the coach and I bought two 50' 30 amp cables (and a matching receptacle) ...not realizing that they were only 110v until I started to wire it up (and ended up with an "extra" wire). (Hey, I don't do that much wiring.) Had I realized, I'd have purchased 50 amp extensions and wired for 220 ... knowing that the outlet had a 30 amp breaker instead of 50. (If only I could park the coach closer to the house!) Still, the primary (and only) connection powers the leg with the charger when 30 amp 110 v is all that's available. So, my question is: Can the "cheater cable" actually work with a 50 amp connection to get power to both legs? In a couple of parks that didn't have 50 amps, it seemed that I could connect to 30 and 20 (or 15)? Would that work? Pete Masterson aeonix1@...
