Hi Gail,
I hope I get a chance to meet you but in any case I went to see the
coach at Sirpilla's RV store on my lunch hour.
I am familiar with this coach in its former condition before it
was renovated. The new paint job did wonders for the appearance.
I can make no judgements about the engine and running gear except to
say that the tires look to be in very good shape. The generator is
not running but they assured me they would have it fixed by this
evening. Nobody there knew how long it had been since the last lube
job but since you anticipate taking this baby on a very long journey
home, I would suggest scheduling a lube and oil change at the Ryder
truck rental place (near Sirpilla's) it would be worth the money
and the extra day it will cost you. They may even let you look over
their shoulder so you can do it yourself next time.
I am sure you intend to take it for a test drive so check out how
loose the steering is, how smoothly it shifts, engine smoking?,
head/taillights & marker lights as well as turn signals functioning.

Gail,
If as you state you are dealing with a very reputable dealer why are you now
having questions. I for one would satisfy myself with a personel inspection or
hire a reputable inspector with knowledge of Bluebird Wanderlodges. No matter
what you decide you in the end will pay for the BB and any repairs and or
upgrades.

This BB is for sale by a very reputable dealer Sirpilla RV in Akron
Ohio. They made a mistake in the description regarding fiberglass
sides and roof. The reason they did not answer the questions is that
I already worked a deal and they ended the listing.

Gail,
I would say that ‘as is’ is defined in the sales description they put up
on ebay. If it wasn’t up to the description, then you should not be held to
the agreement. I doubt there is a judge in the land that would side with a
double talking used car salesman. Your deposit might be tougher to retrieve,
but if you know a lawyer, sometimes an agreement can be brokered. (you get
$5.00 and the lawyer gets $1995, or something like that).

I am sorry you had a bad experience, but you aren’t the first and won’t
be the last. Put it behind and keep looking. Over the 10 or more years you
enjoy the bird you finally do purchase, the 2K will amount to only 4 or 5
fill-ups!

I'm sorry to hear about the outcome of your journey, however, I am not
surprised since I have been in similar shoes. I looked for over a
year for a used, but new to me, motorhome. I travelled long distances
4 times by air or train only to discover serious problems with the
motorhomes. One of the main reasons I bought my Bird is because it
was close to home and easily inspected.
I decided to follow these rules in searching for an RV at a distance:

Never give a deposit without viewing the vehicle.
Always buy a round trip ticket.
Don't rely on the seller for transportation while viewing the coach.
Try to invent creative questions that might provide clues as to how
you might evaluate a coach in person.
Ask for lots of photos and inspect them in close detail.
Evaluate the seller as much as you evaluate the coach.

I'd try reporting the outfit to whatever state agencies regulate their
business in an attempt to get my deposit back.

Gail, sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope it turns around for you, and
that eventually you will purchase a BB. I purchased mine from Randy Dupree, and
although I know will have little problems go wrong with it, all of the major
items are in good shape.
After reading all of the threads on these forums, I myself, concluded that it
would be better to purchased from one of the many knowledable people in the BB
forums, rather than going to a dealer, who knows nothing or very little about
it.
One dealer who I have heard good reports from is Synder's RV, and I believe he
is a BB owner himself, not sure of that though.

As Ernie states below, there are a LOT of wonderful and knowledable people on
the BB forums.

Gail, if there is a rule in Ohio that the deposit mut be returned,
TomW will find it. Sounds like any ebay rules would not apply as you
guys dropped it from the public bidding to make a saleoutside. As
far as having a binding contract. The dealer would have to show
proformance and that is the failure. no proformance , no payment.
Deposits I view as option contracts that roll over to purchase price.
I walk away from them all the time (never 2K). It would be good for
the forum to explore methods to protect yourself from this deception
or misconception (two sides to every story).

Hindsight
fax the dealer/seller the list of Vintage bird buyer questions and
wait for a written fax reply to the issues. the deposit contract
should read that it is nonrefundable ( easer for seller th accept)
but state the reasons ( proformance baced on written statements)
