Swing Radiator in Texas

Henry,
Can't help you with the shop approach. But, if you are handy, can cut
steel, can weld, you can do it yourself and save at least a $$grand. Let
me know and I'll point you to the pictures, procedures, etc. to make it
happen.

Does anybody know if the 87FC35 comes standard with a swing radiator, is it a
factory option or an owner installed feature??? I just could not find the answer
in previous posts, The factory sales literature or anywhere.

Good morning Henry:
(1) I don't know of any in your area
(2) Most mobile service techs do not have the welding or torch tools needed
on their units.
(3) The parts needed to put the swing rad on need to be manufactured by a
good shop
(4) Many have had this done at Randy's in Fla or Holland in Mich as they
have the shop and tools.

It is doable and much needed. The first Factory swings came out in '85 I
believe.

Morning Don:

Yes the '87 has the Factory swing rad. They started in '85 maybe late '84
on the FC's

Swing rad is standard but the 300hp arrangement is a real hassle to service due
to the added complexity of the charge air cooler, patience is a good thing when
working on one.
The service hassle increases as you go up the horsepower food chain.

I modifies my radiator to swing about two years ago. It took about a week
working on and off after work. The way I did mine required three welds. I
cut the pieces, lined everything up, and a friend stopped by with his welder
and welded it up. I used one 1000lb gate hinge. If I need to remove the
radiator I can drain it, remove the hoses, and lift it off. (well two of us
can lift it off anyway!) I posted some pictures, but I think they
disappeared when the site splintered. If you are interested I will dig them
up. If you get to Fort Worth stop by and I will show it to you. It took
longer to correctly route the hoses and Hydraulic lines that to make the
radiator swing.

Hi Howard:

No, I have not seen a swing on a PT. Have to admit though, it would have
been nice during a couple of fan motor rebuilds.

One idea I have seen though, on a PT, it was a stainless steel scoop, about
3 1/2 inches for the duct and ran the length of the rear seam vertical of
the radiator over the louvers. This forced more air flow on the road
through the rad. I know that when I get a PT, I will be building one for mine.
