Don't know a thing about which refrig is best so here
comes the dumb question:

If I understand what some say, i.e. home type
refrig's are less expensive and perhaps even "better"
than the special RV's type most of us have in the
coach; why did the coach manufacturers not install the
home type in the first place?

Most refer's used in RV's are the ammonia cycle while most "home type"
are the freon cycle. The ammonia cycle uses a gas flame most of the
time for the power source to make the unit work. (Serval makes an
ammonia cycle refer for home use also.) The freon cycle utilizes a
compressor as the power source. Gas for the flame is more available
in most RV's than electric. And often is cheaper, though that is changing.

Thanks Rob, for your vote, but the truth is I'm not
smart enough to stir a pot on a subject I know nothing
about.

Because my theory is, "economics wins 99% of the
time," I truly would like an explanation with as much
fact as possible, and somewhat limited opinion. I'm
betting someone on this forum has the answer. We can
also pursue the issue at the RIV refrig seminars, time
permitting.

John, howdy been a long time since we have chatted, Hope to see you
in Perry. This is an interesting topic..All I know is I can run
my "new" refer all summer on propane sitting in the drive way, with
out a refill! Hmm does that factor into anything?? I have never
calculated the daily cost of such all I know is it has some "stuff"
in it when I have to retreat to the coach to avoid the administrator
of the "honey do" list!

Our coach frig. has been on for a year and a half. Today, I decided to
defrost it. About 1/4 inch of frost on the freezer shelf. Some ice on
the cooling fins in the frig. compartment. Seems the unit is working
just fine.Comments?

Curt thats not much ice for a year and a half!

Probably would work more efficiently if it were defrosted a bit more
often. I defrost about twice a year and almost no ice on the plate.

It seems your description of your refrigerator is a mirror of mine.
Most of our use is here in the Southwest and have not wanted for more
cooling at all.

My wife defrosts approximately twice a year. Not much ice unless the kids leave
the door ajar in our humid climate. Our fridge is the original one. Hard to
believe it still works.
