FC Generator Compartment Walls

What are they made of? Kryptonite?

I am trying to thread some self-tapping screws into the "ceiling" of
the compartment to secure my insulation that keeps sagging regardless
of the amount of adhesive I apply. Anyone have any tips? I can't seem
to get anything to penetrate.

Scott- do you have the original insulation? If so, it is probably coming
apart and should be replaced. Stephen Birtles has the new stuff and it is worth

If you have already installed new insulation or your existing material
is in good sound condition and just can't get it to stay "up"...I
would suggest trying a new adhesive and/or to mount a few insulation
hangers with either an epoxy or 3M 5200 Marine adhesive. "Hangers"
are avail from West Marine and basically are a two part system
consisting of a very large bottomed "thumbtack" that is mounted to the
ceiling with adhesive or screws, the "pin" goes thru the insulation
and a square sliding tab goes over the pin...holding up your
insulation. You can easily slit the insulation and slip one in, then
tape the cut with mylar tape. Hangers like this are common use in
marine engine room applications.

space age product that I painted on the doghouse of my 80FC31 and it
is a ceramic heat/sound shield.........I think it is great..and about
the same price of two lead/sponge shields that I bought at Marine
store for my 90SP36........I would rather have the "LIZARD SKIN."

I am going to make an exception because I believe this is so
important. Do not use LIZARD SKIN on your
doghouse or generator compartment. It is a wonderful material when
used as an INSULATOR however it does absolutely nothing for the real
problem caused by a diesel engine running in close proximity to the
driving compartment....NOISE! To reduce noise you need a composite
insulation that combines both a heat shield and a sound suppressor.
To do this effectively, that is to attenuate the specific kinds of
radiated noise that diesels put out, you need a 2# per sq foot
composite foam insulation which contains a lead as a separator
between the two densities of foam. There is also the same composite
that uses a heavy vinyl separator and it does work but at a reduced

however JC Whitney is NOT one of them. If you decide to do it on the
cheap that is of course your efficiency. The choice is yours but if
you want to really reduce the noise and the heat then use the correct
product. Lizard skin is a ceramic insulator and is not suitable for this job.

Hi Hank
I just read abour Lizaed skin last night and thought about it today when I
cleaned up my engine compartment. Soggy foam stuff hanging all around and some
foam actually dis integrating, creating a hell of a mess. Now, if I could get
the engine out and then respray the engine compartment with Lizard Skin, that
would create a nice compartment. How do you like your 90 SP36? You can find my
Handbook on a 91 SP in the files section.

THE 90SP...I PUT THE LEAD/FOAM PURCHASED AT MARINE STORES FOR OVER
$100 PER SHEAT..IT IS NICE BUT HAS A MIDDLE SAG IN IT BUT MUCH
IMPROVED OVER THE "CRAP" BLUEBIRD INSTALLED ORIGINALLY..WHAT A MESS
THAT WAS...CRUMBLES AFTER 16 YEARS..IMAGINE THAT!
I MAY DO THE FRONT RADIATOR HOUSING ON THE SP IN A FEW YEARS
WITH "LIZARD SKIN."

NO MORE MESS OR SAGGING!! ALSO, I PAINTED IT ON.NOT SPRAYED!!!IT IS
SAME AS "MUD" USED ON SHEET ROCK IN CONSISTANCY... I LIKED IT AND
COST WAS JUST A BIT HIGHER THAN.. THE LEAD FOAM SHEETS.. HOPE THAT
ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.
ALSO PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS INTERESTED IN A GREAT BIRD TO EMAIL ME
