Refrigerators
We may need to replace our refrigerator. We currently have a side by
side 2 way (LP and electric) Domestic Model 7030 which I suspect is
the original in our 95 BMC.

A few questions:

Does any one have a preference for Domestic or Norcold and why? (Those
are the only 2 brands offering LP and electic I have heard of for
RV's. Are there others?) What about a big double door rather than a
SBS. I read that someone had a Jenn Air in their's (is that electric
only?) Are there any other options?

And, while we are on the subject, whre do I get a fan for the
compartment behind it? Someone suggested 1 or 2 used computer fans
(pretty cheap).

Are there inexpensive thermostats that you can plug into or hardwire
in that will turn the fan on only in hot weather? If so, whre do you
find those?

Lee I have the same refrigerator and expect it will give up the ghost one of
these days. Yesterday I stopped in at Camping World and they told me the
direct replacement was Dometic New Dimensions iteml #16001 model
#NDR1292BIMH at club price $2879.10. (page 73 2006 catalog. On an earlier RV
I installed a computer donut fan to push air up the coils faster. I just
probed around in the back of the fridge to find 12V and used that to run the
fan. Might want to ask around for the best spot to hook up to 12V.

Lee,

We've had both, but my preference is Norcold as
several times over twenty years' of Birds (and 20 of
non-birds before that), they were willing to "work
with me," well after the warranty was out.

However, unless your "case" is shot, why not ask
Dometic for options to upgrade/replace just the
cooling unit, and/or just the electronics/control
boards and display units?

Just before we sold the coach, we upgraded/replaced
refrig cooling unit (year previously had upgraded all
control boards) and Norcold voluntarily provided the
unit/parts and I was more than willing to pay labor -
very reasonable, we thought.

We have the 7030 refer also, about a year and a half ago it developed
an amonia leak. I had a rebuilt cooling unit put on it in Arkansas. I
believe the total cost plus installation was 640.00 It has a super
warranty with it and has performed perfectly. When I had the cooling
unit replaced there was not a exact replacement for the 7030, you had
to modify the opening to make anything fit. Glad to hear they now have
a replacement size although I would still have gone with the rebuilt
cooling unit. Bob 93pt--Illinois

Norcold has had a few problems lately. Most RV tech's refuse to work on
them due to law suites. There were some defective units out there, caught
fire, burned the rigs to the ground. Norcold was sued as was the dealer who
sold the rv. Then 2 cases where a tech was called out to check units out,
pronounced them defective, and was caught in the law suites as well. Both
cases, the tech's had properly tagged the units and made note of it on the
invoice, and that was what saved them. Nope, no Norcolds for me, I like the
dometics anyway.
