'81 FC35 red switches???
Howdy folks,
Lee and I have picked up the Bird and are sorting out some "issues" at a friends house near Tampa before heading back to Colorado. First, (well not first, but at least "most puzzling"), what are the red switches near the floor, one by the co-pilots feet and the other below the sofa behind the drifvers seat. Next, does the "rear lights" switch control the aux. back up lights? If not, then what?? Lastly, what is the favorite ATF for the Allison? The rest seems to be coming together. Thanks in advance, Doug Engel, Gunnison, CO, '81 FC35 |

Hello Doug and Lee,
Great to have you on board, look forward to hearing about your many upcoming experiences in your new-to-you bird, may they all be pleasant ones. Red Sw-Pass Side-Engine Block Heater Red Sw-behind Pilot Chair-Battery heater You should also have one of those near the bed, that one is your hot water heater. Two light come on automatically in reverse. The other two are your choice. Might get into preference battles here about oil. Mine, Castrol MerconIII, 3208 Shell Rotellla T, 15W-40 Shell Rotella T, 30 for the genset diesel. Have a safe trip home, does your bird have a name? Both heaters only work on 110 volts. Many battery heaters have been removed
even though the switch remains. I believe the switch for the backwards aimed lights on the side of my coach is labelled 'landing lights' (?) Bob, Thanks, I'm guessing that these items work on
shore power or off the genset...correct? I need info for Allison ATF, not engine oil, but thanks for the input. No name yet, still kicking around ideas. I'll be in touch, no doubt. Kerry, Thanks for the info. Lights in question are
marked "rear lights". Gonna get the test light out and do some recon. How's the weather in Denver today, last thur when we flew out it was dropping in temp mighty fast. '81 FC35 red switches???
Sorry Doug, I ran those two names together on the same line.
Castrol MerconIII is for the transmission and used for Power Steering as well. All of the red switches control 120 VAC from the genset or shore power whichever is selected. Like Kerry said, most of the battery heaters have been removed, or don't work. Check the bulbs on the rear lights first, an ohmmeter will work, it may be corroded sockets, notorious for that, or, a poor ground. If push comes to shove you can go on home without these. Heck, I don't even know if mine work, I never back up in the dark, or, go forward either, haha! Doug:
One additional comment regarding your backup lights, on my new to me 84, the two little round back up lights come on whenever it goes into reverse, I also have two rear parking lights, 55W halogens, to which there is a switch on the dash, PLUS it has to be in reverse. I think the bulbs I purchased for the halogens were a T3-55 or something like that. Bill 84FC35SB Terrace, B.C. Bill 84 FC 35 SB "$quanderlodge" Terrace, B.C. Gosh you almost as crazy as I am LOL. Welcome to the family. We recently picked up our coach in Archer Florida and have arrived safely home. Total round trip was almost 9,000 miles. As you go back, try to see some of the other lovely birders on your way, each have their own stories to tell, and all are very helpful. Have a safe trip home, and let us know how things went.
