squealing suburban heater

Another question comes to mind, 2 of our suburban heaters are
squealing, is there a way to lubricate them? Where? how?

Hi Rosemary,

All of mine used to squeal- it is the blower fan bearings. If you
can pull the furnaces out of your coach and remove the motors- drill
a small 1/16" hole in the fan housings beside the shafts (one comes
out the front and one comes out the rear) on the motor. This will
allow you to put some 3-in-1 electric motor oil into the sealed
bearing. Usually, it will not run down the shaft past the seals, so
you cannot just lube the shaft, you have to drill the holes too.

This is a pretty advanced opearation for the shadetree mechanic.
The whole back end of the furnace has to be disassembled in order to
remove the fan motor and you have to be very careful not to damage
any of the gaskets that prevent CO from getting into the coach from
the exhaust side of the furnace. You may also consider just replacing
the unit with a newer, more efficient one from camping world. They
should last 10 years or so with no squealing.

If anyone else is having this problem, we could do a Removal and
Repair workshop at the Maxton, NC rally this spring.

Thanks Shane
that sounds like more than I want to tackle. Guess for now we'll
live with the squeal, maybe we won't need the squeaky ones when we
get to Arizona
