Thanks to all for the response:
Just off a lengthy conversation with DISH. This is what I was told. 1. Distant local channel service is discontinued effective Dec 1, 2006. They get you on a periodic download and that is what happened to me on Saturday. 2. You will not be able to pick up your home base local channels outside 200 miles(approx). Spot Beam in use. During the conversation I gave the tech the following zip codes followed by the response. 33619- Tampa, FL. supplied by Tampa-St. Pete stations.(395 miles from my home) 32578- Niceville, FL supplied by Pensacola-Mobile stations(at home) 78597- South Padre Island, TX supplied by Harlingen-Brownsville, TX area stations( about 900 miles from my home) 3. To obtain "local channels" pay a small fee per month, change the zip code in the DISH setup and it is said to work. Otherwise, call and DISH will set it for you. 4. Local channel service is provided by DISH via Echo 110 I have ordered an A/B switch that is supposed to allow me to switch satellites. Otherwise, it is going to be $700.00 to upgrade, and that smells. Far to much legal @#$% going on these days.(Still smiling) Thanks again, Leroy Eckert 1990 WB-40 "Smoke N Mirrors" Niceville, FL ----- Original Message ----- From: Bruce Morris To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 1:18 AM Subject: Re: [WanderlodgeForum] Space Ship TV Antenna Leroy, I just replaced my antenna with a new Wingard RS-1500. It is omni-directional and according to the literature it is generally considered to be good for transmitters within a 35 mile radius of the antenna. I figure because I mounted it on the old mount and can raise it when we stop that it might even do a little better. Dish now uses a "spot beam" for local programming so my understanding is that you can no longer receive your home stations after you get out of your general coverage area. I don't know exactly how far that is. I hope that we can still pick up our local stations on dish in Florida. We have done it in the past, but I think that was before they went to the spot beam. I'm not sure what the problem was that caused them to change, but since you pay extra for local coverage it seems you should be able to get it anywhere. I presume that local stations somehow objected. I seem to remember that it was a legal issue. Other than that CRS wins. Roger: Thanks, I just made another post about local channel reception. Local
channels other than Network channels were set up in a specified radius. That is how my friend Chicago friend has been operating. I was receiving NY and LA distant Network channels. (ABC prepared to get knocked off line and receive Network and local channels out of Cedar Rapids or someplace nearby. If you move elsewhere then you will receive the channels from stations providing Network coverage in that area. I was doing fine, now I gotta jump through some hoops. DISH referred me to Mydistantnetworks.com as an alternative for distant network service, purported to be the only company to offer this service now. Please, let me know if you get knocked off distant network coverage. I'll report how mine works when I get it straightened out. My local stations are not available outside of an XX? radius. I signed up for Chicago and get it everyplace I go. If I remember properly, it doesn't cost additional when I opted for the local channels, but I'd have to confirm that. Leroy, just tape several local news broadcasts and put one in when
you get home sick. Its always the same old thing. By the way, at the SW Rally in October I won the "Jeopardy" Contest every night. My vast wealth of knowledge impressed everyone. I replaced the UFO dish with an "upgraded" high definition model a couple of
months ago; I can pull in all of the locals that broadcast in HD over it. I also have HD DirecTV with HD Distant Network Services which gives me both the NY and LA national feeds in HD. DirecTV continues to provide me with the local channels, but not in HD. I feed the off-air antenna into the DirecTV HD receiver and it functions as a HD tuner for those stations; the box even gives you a signal strength meter for those channels that comes in handy when tuning. I still need to upgrade the rear TV to an HD model, I have a 19" Sony 1080i LCD mounted under the microwave cabinet currently. It uses the HDMI connection from the DirecTV receiver. I ran a set of component video cables from the DirecTV box to the rear bedroom so its all ready to go. I have never received my area local channels network or otherwise in the bus. I used LA and NY. All I want is the 4 major networks in addition to other DISH programming and I don't care where it comes from. I do not care to decipher how the satellite works, I'd rather drink a beer or two, fry some brain cells and loose at Jeopardy. (Smile) Hope all is well in Romoland. Good to here from you. I was set up in a similar fashion receiving National Distant Network Services from NY and LA. I was told by DISH that DirectTV is under the same mandate to no longer provide distant Network services. It will be interesting to see if your distant Network service is discontinued soon. If not, perhaps they do not like the color of my bus (grin) Leroy Eckert 1990 WB-40 "Smoke N Mirrors" Niceville, FL ----- Original Message ----- From: TJ Hannink To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 11:12 AM Subject: Re: [WanderlodgeForum] Space Ship TV Antenna I replaced the UFO dish with an "upgraded" high definition model a couple of months ago; I can pull in all of the locals that broadcast in HD over it. This is one of those things that involve money changing hands. The
local stations want to count as many eyes as possible to justify their ad rates. The system doesn't anticipate mobile users (i.e. those of us with RVs). This is an area where Federal regulations are involved. Write your Congress representatives and let them know that you think about them every time you turn on the TV ... and that your thoughts are _not_ at all positive. This regulation needs to be changed to allow mobile people to have the convenience of national programming. Pete Masterson aeonix1@...
